Job Title: CROSSING GUARD
Pay Level: $25.00 Per Shift
Schedule: Monday: 7:50 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. and 2:10 p.m. to 3:10 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday: 7:50 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. to 4:10 p.m.

REPORTS TO:
Public Works Director
JOB SUMMARY:
Prepares crossing zones and assists children in crossing streets safely at intersections and other road crossings. Watches traffic closely and stops vehicles as necessary. This is a non-benefitted part-time position. Shifts follow the elementary school schedule, consisting of one hour (shift) of work each morning and one hour at the end of the school day.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Turns traffic signals on and off in preparation for children arriving to cross the intersection. Contacts Midway City public works department in the event of the traffic lights malfunction.
- Place traffic cones at designated points before going on duty and remove signs at the end of the shift.
- Observes road traffic to determine the best timing for road crossings; admits children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings.
- Monitors behavior of children and educates children regarding traffic safety as appropriate.
- Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and reports infractions to police.
- Documents shifts worked by completing and signing a bi-weekly timesheet, which will be submitted to the Public Works Director at the end of each pay period.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands are more than those for sedentary work. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- The ability to meet the physical demands defined above.
- Talking, hearing and seeing, or other effective communication is essential.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
- Some knowledge of local traffic laws; some knowledge of basic traffic safety; some knowledge of basic first aid, basic interpersonal communication skills; some knowledge of the operation of traffic signalization equipment and semaphores.
- Must be willing to work in all types of weather.
