HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR – JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of equipment for groundwork and construction purposes on heavy civil, stream, grading, and utility crews. Equipment operated includes front end loader, excavator, road roller, backhoe, dozer, grader, articulated rock truck, forklift, skid steer and other equipment as needed. May also operate water truck, dump truck, side dump truck, transport truck and other equipment if trained. Primarily work 10-hours per day, 5 days per week. Will also be required to work up to 14-hours per day, and up to 7 days per week as needed during the busy construction season. This position requires traveling for extended periods of time to perform the job duties at various jobsite locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Operates equipment in a safe and professional manner at various job site locations.
· Ability to safely climb and access equipment.
· Operates equipment efficiently with minimal wear.
· Works on the heavy civil crew moving, placing, compacting earth and tailings.
· Works on the stream crew excavating and building new stream.
· Works on the utility crew to excavate and install underground pipelines and culverts.
· Works on the grade crew to set grades and finish to design elevations.
· Works on highway crew for earthwork, utility, and gravel road construction.
· Maintains equipment in a safe and clean condition.
· Performs pre and post-trip equipment inspections.
· Checks fluid levels, tires/tracks, lights, and other controls for safe operation.
· Fuels equipment.
· Greases moving parts using hand-held grease gun.
· Informs Service Technician of any maintenance or repairs needed.
· May assist with General/Skilled Laborer duties at various job sites as needed. May perform physical tasks involved with building stream, laying pipe and utility lines, and/or tasks involved with earth moving and/or road construction.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· May operate dump truck with Class A CDL; current DOT medical card required.
· May operate water truck with Class A CDL with tanker endorsement; current DOT medical card required.
· May assist the Service Technician with equipment maintenance and repairs.
· May perform other duties as needed.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
· High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
· Previous heavy equipment operation experience or training required.
· Must have good depth perception and coordination to drive truck safely and efficiently.
· Must have the ability to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions in English.
· Basic mechanical skills.
