Description

Salary: Part-Time Hourly; Starting: $18.57 - 23.21

General Statement of Duties: Provide novice/introductory/competitive swim instruction with some independence. Provide introductory fundamentals of competitive swimming with a focus on a progression of techniques. Promote an environment consistent with program philosophies and goals.


Supervision Required: Works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and Aquatics Coordinator.


Work Environment: Position may require being in and out of water and constantly using the voice in an often-noisy environment. Depending on program, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions. Work schedule is varied and may require evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours vary depending upon specific program needs. The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all the time. Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand.


Examples of Duties:

  • Plans and instructs novice swim practices; develops and implements age and skill appropriate curriculum.
  • Supervises participants in novice swim program providing for the progress, safety, comfort and enjoyment of participants.
  • Assists with set up and break down of equipment and facilities.
  • Completes required records and documentation.
  • Maintains the organization and cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with participants, parents, and staff, providing accurate information related to work assignment.
  • Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of learning development, stroke technique, water safety, teaching methods, practices, and progressions. Strong personal swimming skills
  • Ability and skill to: Demonstrate initiative, exercise some independent decision making, plan activities and tasks
  • Provide leadership from within team
  • Effectively communicate with staff and public
  • Interact with a variety of patrons/participants
  • Demonstrate swim techniques
  • Establish and maintain positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with all contacts.

Requirements

Tools and Equipment Used: Safety and rescue equipment, small hand tools for minor pool maintenance, phone/walkie - talkie, chemical test kit, pool vacuum, brushes, pressure washer, and various pool cleaning materials.


Physical demands— Must be able to see, sit, stoop, kneel, stand, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. Must be able to assist in rescues, basic first aid, and emergencies as needed. This position also requires the ability to maintain focus for multiple hours at a time in sunny, hot, humid conditions.


Work Environment: Duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions (warm and humid indoor conditions to cool outdoor conditions) and ongoing exposure to sun and pool chemicals such as chlorine. Work schedule is varied and may require evenings, weekends and holidays. Hours vary depending upon specific program needs. Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling and kneeling in order to conduct extractions and deliver basic first aid/life support and to deliver and move equipment and supplies. Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, emergency response, sun exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand.


Education/Experience:

1. High school graduation or equivalency; AND

2. One-year previous work-related experience with swimming instructional programs or coaching; OR

3. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training.


Certification:

1. Possession of or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire a valid First Aid/CPR certification.

2. WSI Certification (preferred but not required)

· Responder a accidentes e incidentes de acuerdo a los procedimientos.

· Comunicarse de manera efectiva con los participantes, los padres y el personal, brindando información precisa relacionada con la asignación de trabajo.

· Actuar como Informante Obligatorio; reportar incidentes de abuso/negligencia infantil.

· Crear experiencias acogedoras y de pertenencia para nuestra comunidad diversa eliminando barreras y obstáculos para la programación y las instalaciones del distrito.

· Realizar otras tareas relacionadas con el trabajo que le sean asignadas.


Competencias:

· Conocimiento del desarrollo del aprendizaje, técnica de brazada, seguridad en el agua, métodos de enseñanza, prácticas y progresiones. Fuertes habilidades personales de natación.

· Destreza y habilidad para: Demostrar iniciativa, ejercer cierta toma de decisiones independiente, planificar actividades y tareas

· Proporcionar liderazgo desde dentro del equipo

· Comunicarse efectivamente con el personal y el público

· Interactuar con una variedad de patrocinadores/participantes

· Demostrar técnicas de natación

· Establecer y mantener relaciones positivas, respetuosas y cooperativas con todos los contactos.


Herramientas y equipos utilizados: equipo de seguridad y rescate, herramientas manuales pequeñas para mantenimiento menor de piscinas, teléfono/walkie-talkie, kit de prueba química, aspiradora de piscinas, cepillos, lavadora a presión y varios materiales de limpieza de piscinas.


Exigencias físicas: debe poder ver, sentarse, agacharse, arrodillarse, pararse, comunicarse, alcanzar y manipular objetos. Debe poder ayudar en rescates, primeros auxilios básicos y emergencias según sea necesario. Esta posición también requiere la capacidad de mantener el enfoque durante varias horas a la vez en condiciones soleadas, cálidas y húmedas.


Ambiente de trabajo: los deberes se pueden realizar en interiores o exteriores, lo que puede incluir trabajar en condiciones climáticas extremas (condiciones interiores cálidas y húmedas para condiciones exteriores frescas) y exposición continua al sol y productos químicos para piscinas como el cloro. Educación/Experiencia:

1. Estar graduado de escuela secundaria o su equivalencia; Y

2. Experiencia laboral previa de un (1) año con programas de instrucción o entrenamiento de natación; O

3. Cualquier combinación satisfactoria de experiencia y capacitación.


Certificación:

1. Tener o capacidad de obtener dentro de los 30 días posteriores a la contratación una certificación válida de Primeros Auxilios/RCP.

2. Certificación del curso WSI (Instructor de seguridad acuática) (preferida pero no requerida)
