Job Announcement: Community Organizer

Start Date: 6/3/2024 (flexible)

Starting Hourly Wage: $19.23-$21.63

This role is hourly and nonexempt (eligible for overtime).

MWA’s payscale can be provided by request

Full-time: 40 Hours per week

We’re hiring a Community Organizer to do real grassroots work at our small but mighty nonprofit organization. MWA works to empower communities both locally and downstream, to transition towards sustainable, resilient, equitable economies and healthy environments where all beings can thrive. The Community Organizer will work to support and mobilize residents who are directly impacted by shale gas, petrochemical, coal, and other development that threaten our climate, ecosystems, water, and quality of life in the Youghiogheny River Watershed and broader Ohio River Valley.

This role will:

👥ORGANIZE & ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY:

Actively engage with a diversity of individuals and communities throughout the Youghiogheny River Watershed and greater Ohio River Valley region. Work with community leaders to host and promote local meetings & initiatives. Develop and provide trainings, support, and information so residents are better equipped to advocate for their communities.

 

📢MOBILIZE:

Mobilize residents for events, actions, and meetings across the region through direct outreach (phone calls, mailings, e-mails, canvassing, etc).

 

✍️STORYTELL:

Identify and take advantage of opportunities to amplify impacted communities’ stories throughout the region via social media, the placement of letters to the editor, op-eds, and interview opportunities.

 

🤝COLLABORATE:

Collaborate with other organizations & coalitions to support regional campaigns & initiatives in Southwestern Pennsylvania and the broader Ohio River Valley.

We are looking for:

  • Aptitude and desire for working within a nonprofit within a rural environment
  • Comfortable working in the field to assist with environmental sampling and monitoring efforts

Required Qualities & Occupational Mindsets:

  • Demonstrated leadership capability and ability to work well with a wide variety of people.
  • Experience living or working in the Youghiogheny River Watershed or rural communities in the broader Ohio River Valley preferred.
  • Ability to multitask, adapt to changing situations, think creatively, and to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work out of our Melcroft, PA office with occasional overnight travel required (i.e. for regional conferences).
  • Self-motivated, independent worker
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and creatively with diverse people and organizations
  • Proficiency in Google Docs, Gmail, Office Suite, and social media and willingness to develop additional skills.
