BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:

The Category Operations Manager is responsible for execution and continuous improvement of category management and maintenance. This position will create new processes, improve or update existing practices for better efficiency, and drive standards and service levels for Category Management. The key disciplines within the Operations team will be Pricing and Cost Maintenance, Supplier Management & Compliance, and Sales Programs & Support. The manager will regularly interface with IT, Sales, Customer Care, and the Category Performance and Strategy Teams. The position will be responsible for one or more teams of individual contributors, within which to foster a high-performance culture, drive change, ensure alignment, and cultivate engagement of associates.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Continuous Improvement:

  • Evaluates current practices against external benchmarks and business intelligence, and assesses improvement opportunities.
  • Develops process maps to identify bottlenecks, duplication of work, or unaddressed needs in current processes.
  • Uses process mapping and lean tools to build capability and processes in a standardized and scalable way.
  • Implements supplier programs best practice.

Operational Excellence:

  • Understands how to leverage systems, data, and analytics with cross-functional partners in the organization.
  • Establishes standards and metrics associated with key processes to measure performance.
  • Recommends system changes or enhancements with supporting business case.
  • Owns supplier communications.
  • Manages Supplier data to inform direction and decisions.

Manages a team of associates that is responsible for tactical execution of the following:

Supplier Management and Compliance:

  • New Supplier set up, maintenance, and phase out
  • Manages supplier contracts; including rebate and marketing investment
  • Compliance with Terms & Conditions of supplier contracts
  • Point of Sale Reporting (monthly)
  • Supplier SOPs and compliance
  • Supplier Accounts Payable discrepancies

Sales Programs and Support:

  • Manages sales field engagement calendars and events
  • Sales Program initiatives
  • Structures and sources for Category-related training for Sales
  • Addresses escalated operations issues as needed
  • Supplier SOPs and compliance
  • Supplier Accounts Payable discrepancies

Pricing and Cost Maintenance:

  • Lists price maintenance process and outliers
  • Cost maintenance process/tally sheet management/scans
  • Structures and sources for Category-related training for Sales
  • New item cost and pricing
  • Annual pricing changes
  • GP hold process

Leadership:

  • Builds a high performing team with clear goals and measurable output, managing performance to expectations.
  • Provides central oversight of Training and Communication for the category department.
  • Drives the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose.
  • Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Supply Chain, or related field.
  • Six Sigma belt certification (green or above) preferred
  • Minimum of seven to ten years of experience to include:

o Industrial Distribution, Supply Chain, or Sales

o Knowledge of the Procurement / Supply Chain process

o Experience with organizational or systems improvements

  • MS Office proficiency required; Access, Business Objects, and Sales Force preferred

SKILLS:

  • Strong execution focus; drive for results required.
  • Proven examples of delivering significant performance improvements, preferably using Lean techniques required.
  • Strong problem-solver; able to diagnose quickly and find root cause required.
  • Able to apply analytics to diagnose problems and propose solutions required.
  • Prioritizes deliverables and allocates resources appropriately required
  • Solid business acumen and knowledge of distribution process required.
  • Successfully navigates the organization’s people and processes to accomplish work efficiently.
  • Works cross-functionally and has effectively participated on cross-functional teams required.
  • Successful internal negotiator required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with presentation experience required.
  • Manages a team with clear goals, performance expectations, and growth opportunities required.
  • Comfortable leading a team through an evolution of change required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel up to 10% of the time may be required.
  • This position may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations Information (“ITAR”) and/or Controlled Unclassified Information (“CUI”).

Telework

Compensation starting at $82000 - $120000 depending on experience.

The salary range represented is based on similar roles in comparable industries, and the cost of labor in respective cities. Actual compensation is based on the candidate’s relevant experience, education requirements and peer pay equity. The Company reserves the right to modify the range as market conditions change.
