ROLE SUMMARY
The Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Coordinator supports performance improvement objectives to ensure continued compliance with the State of Washington’s DOH Trauma Center criteria.. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of leadership and staff to assist with achievement of overall business and patient satisfaction objectives, and the daily care of trauma patients. Collects, analyzes trends, and benchmarks data and outcomes to promote care delivery that assures efficiency, clinical outcomes, and cost effectiveness, and event loop closure. Supports registry requirements of the National Trauma Database (NTDB), Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and state registry. Coordinates regulatory compliance and risk reduction initiatives/processes. Reviews performance and safety data to evaluate issues, promote, and enhance clinical outcomes. Develops reports for improvement initiatives, and conducts research on injury prevention activities.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collects/analyzes relevant data, uncovers root causes, and develops performance/process improvement plans utilizing quality improvement principles and practices. Works to implement strategic improvements.
- Improves and/or supports others in improving the health and wellbeing of all patients through excellence in patient care, teaching and research.
- Reviews performance improvement indicators and medical records for accuracy, completeness of documentation, and audit filters as specified by the Washington State standards.
- Maintains a system for data integrity to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and completeness of the database and PI data.
- Coordinates activities to maintain hospital designation as Level III Trauma Center.
- Provides patient follow-up with referring physicians, hospitals and EMS agencies.
- Coordinates all aspects of the Trauma Performance Improvement program.
- Coordinates in-hospital educational programs such as Trauma Conference, Trauma Committee, Trauma Nurse Course, Timely Trauma Topics, Traveling Trauma Rounds, Trauma Symposium, and unit-based programs. Develops lectures and educational materials as needed.
- Participates in continuing education programs about trauma care and prevention to professional and community groups.
- Performs in-patient rounds to assess patient satisfaction and identify potential process improvement.
- Responds to trauma team activations during regular business hours to observe process and communication between the Emergency Department staff, pre-hospital providers, and surgeons, as requested.
- Maintains knowledge of current theoretical approaches to the delivery of patient care related to trauma.
- Applies standards and specifications established by the Joint Commission of the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the Washington, Department of Health (DOH), and division of EMS/Trauma Care.
- Collaborates with stakeholders including staff, leadership, physicians, vendors, and other professional colleagues/representatives in law enforcement agencies, EMS agencies, referring agencies, Medical Examiner (Coroner), social agencies, outside providers, physicians, patients, and families.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education: Associate’s degree in Nursing required. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience required. Minimum of three years of experience in the Emergency, Trauma, or Critical Care departments required. Attendance of Trauma Outcomes Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) required within one year of hire.
Licenses/Certificates/Registration: State of Washington (DOH) Registered Nurse licensure required. American Heart Association BLS required. Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) required, instructor status preferred. Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN), Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), or Critical Care RN (CCRN) preferred.
