REPORTS TO:        Special Education Supervisor

                                   

POSITION PURPOSE:

This position provides support to teachers and staff in programs providing educational services to students with severe cognitive and behavior disabilities.  This support will include, but not be limited to, assistance in development of functional behavior assessments and behavior support plans; consultation to classroom teams regarding implementation and revision of behavior support plans; instruction to classroom and support staff in appropriate behavioral intervention strategies, including safe physical intervention techniques as required.

 

NATURE & SCOPE:

This position is subject to board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department regulations and applicable state and federal statutes.  This position carries no administrative authority or responsibility.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Support the design of behavior support plans for students with severe behavior challenges with a multidisciplinary team.
  2. Perform observation and evaluation as needed to assist staff in writing or updating behavior support plans.
  3. Debrief new or update behavior support plans with classroom staff.  Provide additional training as necessary to implement the specific behavior support plan.
  4. Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of behavior support plans.
  5. Participate in IEP planning and serve as resource for behavior support at IEP review meetings as appropriate.
  6. Conduct inservice training for support staff, teachers, and educational assistants as requested and approved by Supervisor/Coordinator.
  7. Demonstrate behavioral teaching techniques for teachers, educational assistants, and support staff in the classroom.
  8. Teach staff to identify antecedents to inappropriate behavior and initiate specific de-escalation techniques.
  9. Observe student(s) and document behavior/instructional concerns.
  10. Use personal safety techniques to assure the physical and emotional well being of students and to avoid exposure and injury to self, students, and other staff.
  11. Confer and consult about behavioral issues with supervisor, instructional consultant, and other staff members as appropriate.
  12. Attend staff meetings, IEP meetings or others as requested.
  13. Establish and maintain certification as a trainer in physical intervention strategies approved by the Department of Instruction, Multnomah Education Service District.  Provide initial and refresher trainings in these techniques to designated staff on a consistent annual basis.  Maintain documentation of training status of designated staff.  Monitor inclusion of these techniques in behavior support plans and their safe implementation within the classroom programs.
  14. Maintain files regarding consultation for individual students including functional behavior assessment, behavior support plan, copies of incident reports, observations, and other relevant documents.
  15. Adhere to policies of the District and procedures of the department and/or section.

 OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform additional related duties as assigned by Coordinator and/or Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Training and experience in behavioral intervention techniques and development of functional behavior assessments and behavior support plans.
  • Ability to objectively evaluate and document student progress in the program.
  • Knowledge of computer skills for word processing including ability to write/analyze/compile student information required for reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, staff, and special education team members.
  • Emotional and physical stamina to perform duties as required by the designated task, except for temporary disability. Be able to lift and or manipulate, grasp and hold up to 70 pounds.
  • Knowledge of state/federal laws regarding special education.
  • Reliable transportation to and from multiple locations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Valid Oregon Teaching License with Special Education endorsement. Classroom teaching experience or similar experience with students identified with severe cognitive and behavioral disabilities. Experience in planning and conducting inservice.
