ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
Good work history in customer-service-skills-focused positions, with an emphasis on excellent attendance, strong work ethic, teamwork abilities.
Keyboarding ability of 30 wpm minimum.
Must have legible handwriting and/or printing.
Ability to communicate verbally, comprehend verbal instructions, and have good telephone etiquette.
Good vision, manual dexterity, and physical ability to work well in a highly mobile environment.
Experience with on-line computer systems is desirable.
General clerical skills.
ORGANIZATION: Reports to the Phlebotomy Manager. May receive instructions from Phlebotomy Coordinator, Laboratory Director, or any Laboratory Manager.
Daily activities are set forth in, but not limited by, a responsibility list and monitored by general and direct supervision from the team leaders, coordinators, and Tech II & III's.
Has daily working contact with many other hospital personnel and patients in various departments.

Performs general housekeeping continually on each shift in order to maintain a neat, clean, organized work area.
Answers phone with good ESP skills and demonstrates skill in taking messages and referring phone calls to the appropriate people.
Attends all mandatory in-service programs as determined by Munson Medical Center.
Recognizes the fact that he/she is our primary contact with both outpatients and inpatients and , therefore, is responsible for the first impression the patient has of our laboratory.
Smiles, remains pleasant, and empathizes with the patient.
Works frequently under stress due to multiple emergent and timed blood testing requests.
Remains calm and efficiently follows proper procedure in stressful and/or emergent situations.
Walks or stands most of the day. Walks throughout the Hospital, may need to kneel beside or bend over supine patient to facilitate sample collection.
Activities are controlled by defined procedures and predetermined schedules. However, the priority or work must be determined by the individual on a continual basis. The performance of work is subject to constant interruption and re-prioritization due to different emergent situations that frequently arise during the day.
Collects blood from inpatients, outpatients, and nursing homes according to established procedures and policies. Includes capillary punctures and venipuncture on infants and adults, and radial arterial punctures on adults.
Draws blood from children, infants, newborns and neonates, recognizing the fact that the laboratory procedures will enhance the child's well being.
Uses technology as related to specimen collection, specimen flow, and specimen referral.
Performs and records near-patient laboratory testing procedures. May include instrument checks and quality control procedures.
Performs glucose tolerance tests and is responsible in obtaining the timed blood samples.Performs EKG's.
Performs bleeding time determinations on inpatients and outpatients of any age.
Collects throat swabs for microbiological testing.
Travels to other institutions (e.g. nursing homes, off-site clinics, patient homes) to collect blood/pick-up specimens and/or deliver lab reports.
Travels to and participates in specimen collection at public/private health screening programs.
Administers basic first aid to patients who have fainted during puncture procedure. Recognizes and requests emergent assistance when needed.
Keeps neat and maintains the specimen receiving areas, phlebotomy work-stations, outpatient drawing labs, ensures all supplies being used are not expired by routinely checking expiration dates and consistently checking all areas for expired supplies. Orders storeroom items not on exchange carts, anticipates other supply needs. Informs manager of any supply needs.
Performs and records regular maintenance of point-of-care devices.
Prepares 24 hour urine containers with proper preservatives and labels, with appropriate warning labels.
Stays current with all work-related communications and subsequent assignments (email, required responses, etc.)
May be assigned additional tasks such as clerical duties, pneumatic tube responsibilities, autologus donor collections, diener services, glassware, bone marrow assistance/processing, or assistance in a specific department of the laboratory.
Obtains satisfactory rating on each section of phlebotomy evaluation checklist at end of probationary period.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
