Who we are:
Established in 1926, Mutual Trading Co., Inc. was originally a small co-op organization for centralized purchasing of basic import foods to service the needs of the early Japanese immigrant society in Southern California. We've grown nearly 100 years old now, and command a premiere position among Japanese foodservice suppliers, as well as fill a key role as "Culinary Ambassador" promoting Japanese foods worldwide. Currently, we import, manufacture, and distribute over 7,000 Japanese foods, beverages, restaurant equipment and supplies.

Essential Job Functions
- Meets the monthly and annual sales quota as designated by Sales Manager.
- Develops new business relationships and manages existing accounts with restaurant chains, retailers, distributors, and wholesalers.
- Makes inroads into the American consumer base by initiating new projects/products/ programs.
- Compiles Division IV sales data for Sales Manager, Purchasing Department, and Customers
- Manages brokers to set sales objectives and implement strategies accordingly.
- Visit and communicate with customers and potential customers to provide support, information, and sell the Company’s products.
- Introduces and increase sales of new products to customers. Works with customers to avoid out-of-stock situations
- Coordinates with the accounting department to assure the collection of payment in a timely manner.
- Updates and prepare all monthly sales materials/reports as required by the Company.
- Reports any inventory or service issues to appropriate department immediately
- Produces/participates in trade shows/events as set by business objectives.
- Maintains high levels of customer satisfaction by providing excellent service and building rapport.
- Responds to and communicates with all customers in a timely manner.
- Coordinates urgent deliveries with the customer to accommodate their needs.
- Educates customers on how the products or services can benefit them.
- Inputs and updates orders within the Company database accordingly.
- Analyze data and produce reports on sales activities and results.
- Maintains and safely navigates the Company vehicle as per the Company Vehicle Policy.
- Participates in weekly sales meetings.
- Attends semiannual inventory count on designated day, possibly on a weekend.
- Attends Company events and functions outside of normal working hours.
- Other duties as required.
- Obligation to answer to all management as requested.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to drive and sit in a car for extended periods of time.
- Ability to sit in an office for extended periods of time.
- Ability to type and use a computer for extended periods of time.
- Ability to reach, bend, kneel, and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to use the phone for extended periods of time.
- Working Conditions
o Noise Level: Normal to loud while in the office
Other Requirements
- Business level English – Read/write/speak/listen
- Conversational level Japanese; Business level Japanese preferred – Read/write/speak/listen
- To have and maintain a clean driving record
- Maintain a positive attitude
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Ability to adapt to frequent changes in assignments and workload
- Pass the Sake Adviser course within 1 year of employment
- AA Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree or above preferred
- 4 years of food or liquor sales experience
- 4 years of customer service or sales experience preferred
Knowledge and Skills
- Basic mathematical knowledge – markups, discounts, combining/converting measurements, counting inventory, etc.
- Data Compiling and Analysis skills
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Problem-solving skills
- Basic Microsoft Office proficiency
- Knowledge of ERP systems, especially AS400 preferred
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge and previous attendance of tradeshows preferred
- Knowledge of Japanese foods and sakes
