What are the responsibilities and job description for the Track Maintainer position at MxV Rail?

Overview:

The Track Maintainer is responsible for performing all duties and activities associated with track maintenance and repair. The incumbent is responsible for keeping the railroad track and all components in optimal condition to meet test requirements and/or track standards. Tests sometimes require understanding and proper execution of specifications and adapt to meet objectives and expectations. Repair and rebuild railroad tracks.


Primary Duties:

  • Repair or adjust track switches using wrenches and replacement parts.
  • Cut rails to specified lengths using rail saws.
  • Operate track-wrench machines to tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together.
  • Lubricate machines, change oil, or fill hydraulic reservoirs to specified levels.
  • Clean or make minor repairs to machines or equipment.
  • Drill holes through rails, tie plates, or fishplates to insert bolts or spikes using power drills.
  • Raise rails using hydraulic jacks to allow for tie removal and replacement.
  • Clean, grade, or level ballast on railroad tracks.
  • Clean tracks or clear ice or snow from tracks or switch boxes.
  • Operate single- or multiple-head spike pullers to pull old spikes from ties.
  • Drive graders, tamping machines, brooms, or ballast spreading machines to redistribute gravel or ballast between rails.
  • Operate vehicles that automatically move and lay tracks or rails over sections of track to be constructed, repaired, or maintained.
  • Push controls to close grasping devices on track or rail sections so they can be raised or moved.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's License.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • The ability to read a tape measure and other measuring devices.
  • Must understand and follow verbal, visual, and written communications.
  • Be able to perform strenuous work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Customer support operations will require shift flexibility. The candidate must work morning, afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts. Weekend and holiday hours may also be required.
  • MxV Rail policy requires all prospective employees to complete a criminal background check (Disclosure for Consumer Reports Consent Form) and a pre-employment substance abuse screening (Applicant Consent for Drug Testing Form) as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the above, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience reading and comprehending safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings, schematics, and procedure manuals.
  • One year of Heavy Equipment operation.
  • At least one year of welding/torch-cutting experience.

  • Environment: Must be able to walk in an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces such as ballast. Can stand, sit, walk, reach, balance, stoop, and kneel for long periods. Will require frequent walking over extended areas with uneven footing; flexibility sufficient for track maintenance tasks such as flexing to pick up tie plates, balance sufficient to walk on ballast; standing for more than half of each workday with periodic breaks.
  • Physical: Lift/carrying and pushing/pulling equipment and other objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), 50 lbs. (occasionally), and 75 lbs. (infrequently); occasionally climbing on ladders; bending, stooping, and kneeling; good eye-hand coordination; and bilateral dexterity.
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
