Salary

GS-05: $39,946 - $51,926 Per Year

GS-06: $44,529 - $57,889 Per Year

PLEASE NOTE: There is one vacancy at the GS-05 with an FPL of GS-05 and one vacancy at the GS-06 with an FPL of GS-06. There is no promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level if hired at the GS-05 grade level.

DUTIES

  • Provides pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring application of broad subject-matter knowledge of the features of interest peculiar to the site.
  • Answers a wide variety of visitor questions. The questions encountered arise from observation of the features themselves; from the demonstrated major interests of visitors, or the nature of the talks.
  • Guides large groups of individuals on fixed routes.
  • Maintains order in parties, preventing crowding or damage to historic sites.
  • Provides a wide range of services to visitors, including assistance with lost articles, car trouble, and first aid; and provides information about weather conditions, highway routes, park and concessioner facilities, and prices.
  • Provides current, accurate information concerning the NPS and other surrounding areas of interest, explaining the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession-operated facilities and services, campground availability and hiking trails.


In addition to the duties above, the GS-06 duties include:

  • Independently develops and presents virtual and in-person walks, talks, living history demonstrations, and curriculum-based education programs. Programs are grounded in NPS Interpretive tenets, include multiple perspectives, and attention paid to shared authority of the park's resources.
  • Works independently to open and close the visitor center in accordance with posted hours and standard procedures. Operates an electronic cash register, computer, telephone, radio, and audiovisual equipment daily. Assist with answering park phones, distributing mail, maintaining park files, and maintains records of sales and inventory and is accountable for cooperating association funds and property.
  • Assists with annual reporting and inventory, performing the full range of historic weapons supervisor duties, and assist with plant/animal surveys.
  • Assists with training and guidance to lower graded park staff and volunteers.


AREA INFORMATION

The Town of Daviston has a population of 196. Daviston ranks in the lower quartile for Population Density when compared to other cities in Alabama. The primary coordinate point for Daviston is located at latitude 33.0529 and longitude -85.6397 in Tallapoosa County. The Town of Daviston encompass a land area of 9.14 sq. miles and a water area of 0.03 sq. miles. Tallapoosa County is in the Central time zone.

The highest monthly average temperature in Daviston for July is 80 degrees. The lowest monthly average temperature in Daviston for January is 46.1 degrees. The most monthly precipitation in Daviston occurs in January with 12.3 inches.

The park is located 40 minutes from Auburn, AL and 30 Minutes from Alexander City the two most populated cities less than an hour from the park.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Government housing may be available.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.


Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/24/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40 hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, such as American history, science, public speaking, parks and recreation, education or communications. You must include transcripts.

-OR-

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first determine the percentage of experience held by dividing the number of months of qualifying full-time experience possessed by 12 and then multiplying by 100. Then determine the percentage of qualifying education completed by dividing the number of credits completed in excess of the first 60, by 60 then multiply by 100. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: Work may require extended periods of standing, sitting, walking, moderate lifting and speaking. Work will be with constantly changing audiences, such as school groups, military staff rides, all ages, backgrounds, etc. May require standing, walking over rough, uneven, or hazardous surfaces; driving vehicles; riding bicycles, lifting of moderately heavy items, firing reproduction historic weapons ranging from muskets to cannon. Incumbent must be able to stand for long periods. May require paddling canoes/kayaks or assisting with small water vessel operation. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of duties.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
