Role Summary
The Surgical Technician I will engage in surgical support services such as animal preparation, note taking, anesthesia monitoring, study set up, surgical record review and facilitating surgical staff in completing studies in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
Role Responsibilities
• Assist with operation maintenance of surgical equipment.
• Stocking standard surgical supplies.
• Sterilization and preparation of surgical suites, equipment and tools.
• Surgical sanitation and aseptic technique with surgical site preparation.
• Drug calculation and administration including but not limited to eye drops, topical, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal and catheter placement.
• Use of anesthesia machines including anesthesia monitoring, assessment of depth, patient monitoring and vital sign monitoring.
• Intubation/extubation, induction of anesthesia, ventilation.
• Paper and electronic data collection, including detailed observations and note taking as well as data review.
• Handle laboratory animals.
• Waste management including proper disposal of biohazard materials and chemicals.
• Other duties as assigned.
Role Requirements
• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Bachelor’s degree in animal or life sciences with a minimum of 6 months experience preferred.
• SRA or ALAT certification preferred. Required to begin application process for SRA certification within 2 years of hire.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
• Good written and oral communication skills.

Special Requirements
• This role will spend approximately 15% of time in an office setting and 85% of time in the laboratory. There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of, and/or exposure to, animal tissues and zoonotic organisms.
• Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.
• Physical activity including lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing and ascending ladder without restriction.
• Ability to spend most of the day standing or walking.
• Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts with short notice.
