What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrections Sergeant Supervisor - Nebraska State Penitentiary position at Nebraska State Government?
The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) is currently looking for a proven leader to fill the role of Supervisor Sergeant. This Corrections Sergeant Supervisor at NSP will be the first-level leader to a team of Mailroom team members and Corporals, providing effective and efficient supervision and evaluation of staff working in our mailroom. Assigned full supervisory functions of evaluating performance and counseling assigned Mailroom team members and Corporals, including recommending disciplinary and corrective actions to be taken. Plans, assigns, schedules, and directs activities of assigned staff to establish schedules and priorities, to identify and resolve work needs, and to ensure continuity of operations. Assists in disseminating information to custody staff and inspecting for irregularities among custody personnel. Monitors inmates/offenders in a wide variety of situations and activities, either directly or indirectly, through subordinate Corporals. Operates maximum security areas within the facility, i.e. adjustment centers, segregation areas, etc. Acts as a source of information for inmates/offenders regarding facility policy, regulations and offender services. May provide counseling for special problem inmates/offenders in areas concerning custody. Conducts and evaluates on-the-job training (OJT) for assigned Corrections Corporals and Mailroom team members under their direction. Makes recommendations as to quantity and quality of OJT provided. Ensures the application of all Policies, Procedures, Post Orders, etc.; may participate in the development of these policies. Becomes directly involved in handling incidents involving high security or problem inmates/offenders, i.e. segregation problems, high risk inmate/offender transportation, etc.; Will be involved in handing inmate grievances pertaining to mail issues and provide responses to the inmate population regarding held mail. Oversee the process of copying mail for distribution to the inmate population. Assist with/ fill in when necessary in the mail room.REQUIREMENTS: High school education plus two years of corrections experience, and experience or training, in leading or supervising other staff. Must be able to legally possess a firearm and ammunition.
PREFERRED: Two years NDCS experience, one of which in a supervisory capacity.
OTHER: A valid driver's license is required. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
