What are the responsibilities and job description for the Housing Inspector I position at Nebraska State Government?

The Nebraska Public Service Commission is looking for a dedicated, self-motivated individual to provide support to the Commission’s Housing and RV Department as a Housing Inspector I. This position will be responsible for inspecting manufactured and modular homes, as well as recreational vehicles at manufacturing facilities, retail outlets, and at home sites (consumer complaints) in the State of Nebraska to assure compliance to safety codes and standards.

The position requires strenuous physical activity, including substantial walking, climbing ladders to access scaffolds and roofs to a height of twenty (20) feet above ground level. Substantial travel, mostly within the state, required.

Hiring Rate: $52,176.07 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications

Work Schedule: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday; flexibility available

Dress Code: Casual

Location: 1200 N Street, 300 The Atrium, Lincoln, NE 68508• Inspects Nebraska manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, and modular housing at production facilities and at retail outlets to ensure compliance with State and Federal Codes and Standards.
• Confers with staff at production facilities and retail outlets to gather and disseminate information.
• Writes and presents reports concerning compliance with appropriate construction codes and standards to communicate findings and conclusions of inspections made.
• Investigates and resolves complaints to ensure structure and/or vehicle compliance with construction and safety codes and standards.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and training sessions to develop and acquire skills and expertise dealing with manufactured homes, recreational vehicles and modular housing inspection techniques and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS: An associate degree or higher in construction management, building construction technology, civil engineering, or related field. Experience inspecting manufactured homes, modular housing units and/or recreational vehicles may substitute for education on a year for year basis. Proficient with Microsoft Suite (excel, word, access, and outlook). Ability to work independently while handling confidential information.

Must possess a valid Nebraska Driver’s License.


PREFERRED: Two (2) years knowledge of the following construction codes Federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard; International Residential Code (IRC); International Building Code (IBC); and/or National Electrical Code (NEC); and one (1) year of the National Fire Protection Association Standard on Recreational Vehicles (A1192).Knowledge of: basic principles, procedures, and techniques of structural, electrical, plumbing and heating systems used in housing construction. Knowledge of manufactured homes (Federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards), recreational vehicle (National Fire Protection Association 1192) and modular housing (International Residential Code and International Building Code) construction and design practices, methods, and terminology , ability to comprehend and apply State and Federal Codes and Standards dealing with the design and construction of manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, and modular housing construction practices and techniques with approved quality assurance manuals and plans. Ability to detect faults in manufacturing, materials, and hazards to health and safety in manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, and modular housing. Formulate conclusions concerning plant/operation compliance with appropriate codes, standards, and plans.

Ability to: interact with management and staff of production facilities and retail outlets to establish and maintain effective working relationships, communicate information gathered by visual observation through written reports and oral presentations, compile and maintain records of work activities, apply and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications dealing with housing construction; prioritize/organize work, perform excellent data analysis and problem-solving skills

Skilled in: operating and maintaining computer equipment and other office machines; developing work and resource usage plans, initiating cost reduction measures, and implementing performance improvement actions.
