Title: Support Specialist
Job Summary
The Support Specialist (Overnight) role on the New Beginnings support team is to maintain a safe and sanitary living environment for residents in the community. The Support Specialist ensures the community spaces and grounds are clean, organized, and free from intruders during the overnight hours. The role is responsible for monitoring the environment for safety issues and intervenes to help deescalate conflict should it occur. The position also assists the Housing Navigator to create a housing-focused culture in the community.
New Beginnings is an alternative shelter community in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where 20 individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness reside. New Beginnings offers chronically homeless individuals a safe, positive living environment combined with personalized support services to help them reestablish stable housing. Residents at New Beginnings participate in the governance and operations of the community with assistance from the New Beginnings support team.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Leadership
- Bring a spirit of service, patience, creativity, and enthusiasm to support the success of residents at New Beginnings.
- Participate in creating a workplace that values diversity and is free of discriminatory attitudes and practices.
- Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork among New Beginnings’ staff and collaboration with community partners.
Community Operations
- Remain awake and alert throughout the overnight hours monitoring the community for intruders or behavior that violates the safety guidelines and program policies.
- Inspect grounds and facilities and complete fire watch log on a bi-hourly basis.
- Perform de-escalation interventions and implement suspensions when appropriate.
- Perform crisis interventions as needed, including determining when it is necessary to involve other staff or emergency responders.
- Complete and follow-up with incident reports as needed.
- Deep clean, organize, and perform light maintenance in the shared facilities building.
- Encourage and empower residents to be successful in reaching their housing goals.
- Perform affordable housing searches online and post results on resource board.
- Prepare breakfast each morning in accordance with nutritional and health guidelines.
- Participate in client grievance process.
- Model proper boundaries.
Administrative and other Duties
- Respond to in-person inquiries in a professional manner.
- Read notes from previous shift and record notes during shift to coordinate care among support team
- Ensure protection and security of files and records.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the New Beginnings Program Manual and Employee Handbook
- Participate in organizational meetings, trainings, and community-based events.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Skills/Knowledge Required
- Ability to demonstration sensitivity and develop rapport with people experiencing homelessness who may experience a range of physical and mental health conditions.
- Ability to maintain a professional, customer service-oriented attitude at all times.
- Collaboration skills so residents may fully participate in the operation of the community but ability to work independently if necessary to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Exercise good judgement to demonstrate empathy but firmness about rules.
- Ability to apply crisis intervention and de-escalation skills in high-stress situations.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to be productive with minimum supervision.
- Strong communication skills
- Basic competency with using computers and Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to transport individuals as needed.
- Valid Arkansas State Driver’s License.
- Able to occasionally work a flexible schedule including weekday and/or weekend shifts
Physical Requirements / Work Environment:
- Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and carry up to 10 pounds for short periods of time.
- Must be able to occasionally participate in physical activities throughout the facility, on the property and/or in the community.
