New England Baptist Hospital’s Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant Fellowship (OSPAF) is a 12 month advanced training program targeted to the motivated graduate, or early career practitioner, seeking to develop a more comprehensive understanding of orthopedic medicine. A blended didactic and clinical format ensures that applied science drives curriculum. NEBH OSPA Fellows are integrated into the clinical staff of one of the nation’s top hospitals for orthopedic care, while maintaining protected educational status within a highly regarded and long established teaching institution.

The New England Baptist Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant Fellowship will lead the region in post graduate orthopedic education by establishing a lasting model for advanced practice specialty training in New England. Through unwavering commitment to scholarship, clinical judgement, procedural excellence, and cultural competence, the NEBH OSPAF will set a new standard for advanced practice orthopedic care.
Objectives:
The graduate fellow will demonstrate superior clinical capability in the diagnosis and management of adult musculoskeletal disease. Subspecialty training will be provided in adult reconstruction, sports, spine, foot and ankle, upper extremity, trauma, and physiatry. OSPA Fellows will function confidently in both inpatient and outpatient settings, utilizing and facilitating a full spectrum of treatment modalities from conservative management to surgical intervention.
Program Length:
The NEBH OSPAF is 12 months in length and begins October 1, 2022.

Curriculum:
The program consists of a blended didactic and clinical curriculum. The OSPA Fellow will participate in orthopedic staff duties while maintaining protected educational status during their fellowship year. The fellow will participate in daily teaching rounds, weekly conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and weekly interdisciplinary conferences. Subspecialty training will be provided in adult reconstruction, sports, spine, foot and ankle, upper extremity, trauma, and physiatry. Fellows with a special interest in pediatrics are encouraged to seek out this subspecialty experience during their 6-week elective. All subspecialty rotations include corresponding outpatient clinic and OR experience, as well as subspecialty conference. Dedicated scheduling is provided for scholarly development including lectures, assigned readings, small group discussion, competency assessment, and a research project. No call is required, but the fellow will be strongly encouraged to participate in collegiate sports coverage during their sports medicine subspecialty rotation.

Credentials Awarded:
Upon completion of program the OSPA Fellow will be awarded a certificate of excellence from New England Baptist Hospital.
Entry Requirements:
a. Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant Program
b. Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
c. License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Massachusetts
d. Current DEA license
e. Current BLS and ACLS certification
