Position Details
The Director, Learning Experience Design will be based out of a home office located anywhere within the contiguous United States or United States territories that fall within the Atlantic time zone.
Position Overview
The Director, Learning Experience Design is a systems thinker who leads the translation of our program design work into the creation of a holistic, meaningful, and robust online learning experience. They possess a comprehensive understanding of the full product lifecycle and participant experience, from program enrollment through program completion. The Director, Learning Experience Design leverages strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization to ensure that our design processes and decisions are collaborative and relevant to the most pressing needs of our staff and program participants, while utilizing knowledge of adult learning and user experience design to innovate and continuously improve the quality of our programming.
This position reports to the Senior Director, E-Learning & Design.
Specific Responsibilities
Participant Experience and Cross Functional Planning

Lead the assessment, alignment, integration, and feasibility review of proposed decisions from various teams to ensure a holistic, meaningful, and robust online learning experience for the participants.
- Make final decisions about the structure of the online learning experience, that is shared with the Technology team.
- Lead continuous cross-functional efforts to prioritize the participants’ learning experience, securing buy-in for key recommendations and timelines while balancing the needs of various teams and ensuring that collaborative partnerships are maintained.
- Lead cross-functional team planning, leveraging informal leadership skills to ensure on-time delivery of all projects.
- Lead the needs analyses gathering, working with participants and staff members to identify necessary LMS updates. Guide LMS revisions in partnership with the Program Technology team.

Create, track, and enhance internal processes systems to continuously improve efficiency, quality, and accuracy.

Leverage expertise regarding the program lifecycle to design the online learning experience to represent the overall vision for Program Design by:
- Designing the sequence of the online learning experience to align with and build upon the delivery of COPs, coaching sessions, etc., seamlessly connecting synchronous and asynchronous learning components.
- Creating a dynamic and user-friendly experience that meets the needs of program participants and internal stakeholders.

Partnering with the Program Technology team on the user interface and to ensure the design is scalable and realistic within the realm of our existing technologies.

Work with stakeholders from multiple teams to gather, synthesize, and leverage formal and informal data to prioritize and implement changes that support the ever-changing needs of our staff and participants.
- Lead internal focus groups/workgroups in collaboration with the Program Technology and eLearning teams.
- Work with Program Learning to understand and address trends in participant data.
- Ensure that materials produced across teams are consistent and aligned to New Leaders brand guidelines.
Support handoff of materials from Program Design to Program Technology, and from Program Technology to Program Implementation
- Cross-check programmatic materials in preparation for building out learning modules within the Learning Management System.
- Track the movement of all program materials as they move between different teams.
- Develop, implement, and manage systems for improving the efficiency of our handoff, tracking, and testing processes.
- Review and inform internal training plans and materials to ensure that they reflect New Leaders’ programmatic vision and address any knowledge gaps as we implement new products, systems, and technologies.
Research and Innovation
- Lead and participate in strategic discussions that support a forward thinking approach as we develop future iterations of our programs.
- Develop wireframes, storyboards, user/process flows.
- Stay up to date on current research and studies describing best-in-class design and user experience.

- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Seven years of professional experience required.

- Comprehensive understanding of every aspect of the participant experience, from program enrollment through program completion.
- Ability to think from a systems perspective, understanding the implications of key decisions for a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to juggle between high-level strategy work and “in-the-weeds” technical tasks.
- Proven ability to develop cross-functional systems for project management, tracking, and quality assurance.
- Ability to plan for and facilitate productive cross-functional meetings.
- Strong strategic thinking, planning, and time management skills which support an ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, superior organizational skills, self-direction, and motivation.
- Proficiency in Office365, Google Suite and willing to learn new software/technology; understanding of the capabilities and limitations of Learning Management Systems or a willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated experience producing and developing multimedia content for online learners.
- Instructional design experience required.
- School-based knowledge and experience is a plus.
