  • Schedule is 12 hour shifts, rotating 7 days on and 7 days off
General Purpose: To provide patient care through utilization of the nursing process.  The nursing process is demonstrated by the staff registered nurse’s ability to work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team in planning, directing, providing and evaluating patient care.  The ED RN/Charge Nurse is responsible for providing leadership, positive role modeling and critical thinking skills. The charge nurse provides direct patient care as needed.  The charge nurse acts as liaison between all areas: Emergency Room, Acute Care, Swing Bed and Extended Care Services, DON and CEO, by effectively communicating and problem solving. This position provides leadership and positive role modeling to facilitate staff development and teamwork.  The ED RN/Charge Nurse is accountable for completion of all essential shift duties for his/her position as well as those of the staff he/she supervises.
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  1. Works with acutely ill patients, including emergency situations
  2. Responds to other departments requesting emergency assistance and assigns staff accordingly during emergencies
  3. Works with swing bed patients, both skilled nursing and extended care
  4. Works independently as well as functioning as a team member
  5. Maintains an organized and timely change-of-shift report that enables all oncoming staff to hear report on all patients in the facility. 
  6. Capable of adapting to changing environment while maintaining professionalism 
  7. Nursing Process – Assess patient needs, Identify patient problems
  8. Plans and implements appropriate nursing interventions
  9. Evaluates patient care outcomes and documents all of the above
  10. Teaching – Identifies the learning needs of the patient and/or significant others and initiates measures to meet these needs.
  11. Leadership – Provides direction to other members of the nursing team to ensure that patient care is administered in a thorough, safe, and knowledgeable manner. Being a positive leader to others while supporting the hospital goals 
  12. Assists with orientation for nursing students and/or new personnel to provide training and direction.  Serves as preceptor in the orientation of new staff (both permanent and contract staff
  13. Identifies problem areas in nursing unit, such as understaffing, absenteeism and wastefulness, and takes corrective action in collaboration with the Director of Nursing or CEO.
  14. Enforces NCHD policies and departmental rules to maintain the professionalism and good order of the patient care area.  Hold staff accountable for carrying out job responsibilities. 
  15. Fulfills the role of overseeing the delivery of optimal patient care in the absence of the Director of Nursing, maintaining communication with him/her or the CEO regarding issues impacting patient care.   
Other Duties/Responsibilities: Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards. Perform other related duties as required to ensure the smooth operation of the hospital. This individual is expected to follow all policies and procedures of NCH and observe the rules and regulations pertaining to Corporate Compliance and confidentiality (HIPAA).
 
Supervisory Duties: LPN’s, CNA’s/ED Tech, Nursing Students, etc
 
Education or Formal Training:
1. Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing
2. Current licensure of Registered Nurse in the State of Wyoming
3. Must maintain current ACLS, PALS, BLS, & TNCC certifications at all times
 
Physical Activities:
Under one third of the time you may need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to perform your job duties.  One-third to two-thirds of the time you will stand, walk, use your hands, or reach with your hands and arms, or sit.  Over two thirds of the time it will be necessary to talk or hear.  You will frequently bend, reach and push or pull less than 50 pounds.  Occasionally you will squat, kneel, climb on a step ladder, twist at the waist, and rotate above the waist.  Up to one-third of the time, you must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from a twelve (12) inch height to waist height.  The ability to see with clear vision at 20 inches or less, 20 feet or more, strong peripheral vision, three-dimensional vision and ability to judge distances and spatial relationships (depth perception); and the ability to adjust focus is necessary.
