Position: TRANSIENT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY LEADER

Main Functions:
The Transient Outdoor Activity Leader performs general work associated with leading several outdoor activities for youth and teen summer camps, as well as the general public, including canoeing, nature walks, survival skills, fishing and archery.
Reports to: Outdoors Program Manager
Duties:
- Collaborate with a team of other Outdoor Activity Leaders to provide field trips for summer camps across New Orleans at Joe W. Brown Park, accommodating up to 50 children or teens per day-long session
- Provide outdoor recreation and educational instruction for rotating groups of youth and teens by learning and carrying out detailed lesson plans
- Assist in the general operation of the Open Canoeing and Fishing community program every Saturday at Joe W. Brown Park
- Assist the Outdoors Program Manager, as well as various camp directors and counselors, by supporting field trip logistics and administration that are unique to each summer camp
- Explain and enforce all safety regulations and procedures for all participants
- Provide a positive, safe and supportive learning environment for all participants
- Uphold the discipline protocol for youth and teen campers when necessary
- Assist in the general operation of the Open Archery community program at the Joe W. Brown Archery Range
- Set up and break down equipment prior to and after field trips and programming
- Work with the Outdoors Program Manager and cross-departmental NORD staff to enrich the experience of outdoor programs for all participants
- Support a team effort to maintain an organized and clean office and workspace
- Regularly inspect equipment and facilities to ensure upkeep and cleanliness and report any issues or defects to the Outdoors Program Manager
- Maintain current and accurate paperwork as needed, including incident reports, summer camp attendance records and personal timesheets
- Provide regular feedback to supervisors regarding improvements to safety, efficiencies and services provided
- Effectively communicate with participants, parents/guardians and the general public by answering questions thoroughly and properly
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must be able to conduct outdoor activities in the summer heat for extended periods of time to accommodate summer camp field trips
- Experience working with children and teens preferred
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player
- Must be comfortable working outdoors
- Knowledge and astute awareness of various recreational activities, programs, principles and practices
- Ability to perform administrative duties as needed
- Extremely responsible, reliable, punctual and detail oriented
- Ability to work independently in the absence of direct staff supervision
- Ability to maintain effective work relationships with staff, patrons and individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to represent NORD in a professional and courteous manner
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or GED issued by a state department of education.*
AND
EITHER: Successful completion of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university.*
OR: Permanent or probationary status as a Recreation Leader, Assistant and one (1) year of experience in this classification with NORDC.
OR: Two (2) years of experience instructing individuals or groups in either a recreational or educational setting.
Compensation:
- Base Wage: $17.15/hourly
- Work Week: Tuesday – Saturday (20 hours/weekly)
- Work Period: May 29, 2024 through July 27, 2024
