Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Physics at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the field of Astronomy or Astrophysics, starting in August 2024. The initial appointment is expected to be at the assistant professor level. An appointment at a higher rank might be considered for exceptionally qualified applicants. In particular, the Department is seeking qualified candidates who will develop a vigorous research program in observational studies under the above-mentioned fields. The Department of Physics has twelve faculty members () with active research areas that include experimental nuclear physics, astrophysics, chemical physics, biological and soft matter physics, computational physics, atmospheric sciences and meteorology, and condensed matter physics. The Department serves both undergraduate and graduate students at the MS and PhD level.

The ideal candidate will establish and maintain a vigorous, externally funded research program, collaborate with other faculty, and direct the research activities of both undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses. Other responsibilities include service to the Department, College, University, and the community.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an 1890 land-grant doctoral research university dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology integrates science, mathematics, and technology to advance knowledge and prepare the next generation of science and technology leaders. The College embraces the mission of the University as a land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM by expanding new frontiers in science, creating novel technologies, developing innovative approaches to STEM teaching and learning, and formulating scientific and technological solutions that lead to transformative social and economic development. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the Applied Science Technology PhD Program. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.

The Department of Physics has twelve faculty members () with active research areas that include experimental nuclear physics, astrophysics, chemical physics, biological and soft matter physics, computational physics, atmospheric sciences and meteorology, and condensed matter physics. The Department serves both undergraduate and graduate students at the MS and PhD level. The Department of Physics offers Bachelor of Science in Physics, Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology, Master of Science in Physics. The Department is also part of the Applied Science and Technology PhD Program with a concentration in Applied Physics under the College.
Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. in physics or physics-related discipline is required by the start of employment.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
The areas of interest include astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and observational astrophysics. Preference will be given to applicants with a successful postdoctoral research experience in these fields. Strong research record in one of the above-mention areas.
