The NC State Equine hospital provides state of the art, continuous care for elective, urgent (same day), and emergent cases, as well outpatients, through the hospital-based Equine Medicine, Equine Soft Tissue Surgery, Equine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Equine Emergency services.
The Equine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine service is overseen by specialists with board certification in Equine Surgery and Equine Sports Medicine. The service sees elective surgical cases and outpatient appointments during weekday business hours, and is available for emergent care of orthopedic injuries 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The Sports Medicine clinicians also provide on-farm imaging and sports medicine consultations, through strong collaborations with referring veterinarians. The Orthopedics and Sports Medicine service is the conduit for elite performance horse care within the large animal hospital.
Essential Job Duties
The candidate will have primary case responsibility for outpatient podiatry cases, and will provide consultation and treatment for podiatry of hospitalized cases. The successful candidate will provide advanced podiatry expertise, as well as effective and collegial communication and collaboration with internal services. They will be responsible for student and house officer training. They will be responsible for collaborating and communicating with referring veterinarians and farriers, including university and community outreach.
Clinical duties: The position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and management of equine podiatry cases, with a specific focus on therapeutic shoeing and performance horse shoeing cases. The person in this role will be responsible for evaluating and treating clinical podiatry cases Wednesday through Friday, with some flexibility in scheduling based on clinician availability. Lameness and sports medicine cases would be evaluated alongside Surgery and Sports Medicine clinicians. Outpatient shoeing plans would be created by the person in this role, through collaboration with radiologists and with clinicians with expertise in surgery and sports medicine on the Equine Orthopedic and Sports Medicine service. Podiatry consultation and therapeutic foot care services for hospitalized patients would also be provided by the person in this position.

Teaching: The person in this position would be expected to teach students and house officers podiatry and podiatry related imaging while evaluating and treating clinical podiatry cases. This person would attend and contribute to daily student and various house officer rounds. Pre-clinical teaching expectations include coordinating and facilitating podiatry labs within several 1-3 year DVM courses, and lecturing in core, elective, and immersive 1 week electives. The person in this role would assist with the Equine Primary Care course 2-4 times per year, and would work closely with curriculum leaders as a content expert for the equine handling, safety, and general skills portion of the curriculum.
University/Community Outreach: Within this category, expectations include supervision and administration of a foot care program for all university-owned horses and leading community educational events.

Minimum Education and Experience
DVM or equivalent degree and AFA Certified Farrier (CF) or higher level of farrier certification.
Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in North Carolina also required.

Other Required Qualifications
Candidates must be enthusiastic about equine podiatry and teaching and have a DVM, CF, and prior relevant equine farrier experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Journeyman Farrier certification.
3-5 years of experience with therapeutic and performance horse shoeing.
