Residential Advisor - Fellowship Program

North Cross School, a co-educational, JK3-12 day and boarding school in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking Residential Advisors for the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a part-time position focused on the care and support for the school’s boarding community that reports to the Director of Residential Life. North Cross is dedicated to providing an enriching educational experience to our students while fostering their personal growth.

Position Description

The Residential Advisor works as a member of a team who will provide supervision, wellness and academic support, cultural and recreational activities, student transportation, and assist with organization and disciplinary structure for the boarding program. Together, the residential advisors help to support a population of 42 students from around the world.

The Residential Advisor is a supervisor, caregiver, teacher, advocate, disciplinarian, and trusted adult for our students. They help to create an environment that is uplifting and encourages a culture of belonging and inclusion within the community. The Residential Advisor is driven by continuous engagement with the students and embraces this role as a lifestyle rather than a job while serving as legal in loco parentis.

Position Overviews: Duties and Responsibilities

The successful residential advisor will…

• Demonstrate good judgment and make all decisions with student wellness as the first priority.
• Be a role model of appropriate behavior and community engagement at all times.
• Reside on dorm in school-provided housing in downtown Roanoke.
• Work closely with residential faculty, staff, and students; attend all staff meetings and participate in trainings and orientation.
• Be on duty for designated weeknight (Sunday - Thursday) and weekend (Friday - Sunday) shifts. Attend additional school events and dorm activities beyond the normal duty hours.
• Help to develop, sponsor, and lead programming that supports the boarding school experience.
• Provide transportation for boarding students to North Cross School, appointments, holiday breaks, school-sponsored activities, or other travel related to the boarding experience.
• Fulfills all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Either currently pursuing or have obtained a bachelor's degree.
• Must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass the North Cross vehicle driver training.
• Hold a current CPR/First Aid certification (training can be provided).
• Must pass the standard background checks required of all North Cross Employees.
• Prior experience working with young people in a residential, academic, or similar role.
• Demonstrates strong leadership and crisis management skills.
• Commitment to North Cross School’s mission and values.
• Engage with students and build positive relationships.
