GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The HR Manager is responsible for all human resources and payroll functions for the Sitka Sound Seafoods facility. The duties cover a wide variety of responsibilities and work tasks. A successful HR Manager models professional and ethical behavior and upholds company policies. Recruits, interviews, hires, onboards, and orients employees. Performs all timekeeping and payroll processing functions. Handles various HR functions and issues for our hourly employees. This job develops recruiting and retention strategies to build a high return rate each season, processes payroll, and works with employees and staff to resolve HR matters. They also ensure employment separations are handled consistent with policy and regulations. Due to the seasonal nature of our industry, the HR Manager works extended hours, seven days per week during peak production seasons. This position is exempt from overtime (not paid overtime) and reports to the VP, HR & Administration.
RESPONSIBLITIES:
Ensures plant has full complement of personnel needed for seasonal seafood production, including replacement employees as needed.
Develops and posts open job descriptions, screens applications, interviews candidates, makes hiring decisions with input from departmental managers, extends job offers and tracks all data related to hiring.
Books travel arrangements for out-of-town employees.
Orients new and returning employees and trains them on company policies and practices.
Completes all paper and electronic HRIS onboarding for employees, consistent with company policies and regulations.
Creates and maintains paper personnel files, electronic HRIS and payroll data, and related HR documentation.
Using electronic time clock system, manages all time data, processes standard payroll and issues off-cycle paychecks as needed.
Oversees the bunkhouse and meal service and handles any issues or concerns that arise.
When necessary, works with the VP, HR & Administration to conduct employee investigations.
Prepares and delivers termination notices.
Coordinates work shifts and monitors attendance of production staff.
Coordinates employee benefits with the corporate office.
Works with employees and management staff to resolve HR matters.
Ensures employment separations are handled consistent with policies and regulations.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of experience with human resource functions with a general understanding of HR and payroll regulations; company is willing to provide in-house training in these areas.
Intermediate MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) skills.
Ability to work extended hours, seven days a week, during peak production periods.
Ability to work well independently and with others.
High degree of integrity and ethics. Proven track record of upholding company policies, enforcing them fairly and consistently, and safeguarding confidential information.
Ability to maintain professional composure in high stress work environment.
Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Willingness to work in an office setting in a seafood processing plant.
Valid driver license to be able to drive the company van.
Seafood production experience preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is mainly performed in an office setting, but it is located at a seafood processing plant. This type of environment has cold/humid conditions, and there is exposure to raw fish in the processing areas. Areas within the plant contain moving and loud machinery. Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs; sitting, standing, walking.
