The job of assistant superintendent, Student Learning and Support Services, is done for the purpose of assisting regional public and private school district staff and administrators to design, manage, implement, and evaluate curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs, overseeing direct and indirect service programs to school districts, maintaining current researched-based expertise in P-12 curriculum development, instructional, and assessment strategies, and maintaining adequate staffing to ensure that objectives of NEWESD 101 programs and services are achieved within budget and in compliance with NEWESD 101’s goals and practices.

The assistant superintendent reports to the superintendent.

Interviews for this positions are anticipated to be March 8, 2023.
  • Manages assigned program and  departmental responsibilities for the purpose of achieving outcomes in relation to organizational objectives and ensuring conformance with legal, financial, and NEWESD requirements.
  • Provides regional leadership for the purpose of integrating curriculum, developing performance-based instruction and assessment, and assisting in partnerships with businesses, communities, and higher education.
  • Anticipates significant educational changes, trends, regulations, and innovative developments for the purpose of communicating changes to regional school districts related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Identifies needs and develops programs to support school districts in implementing and managing curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the purpose of ensuring organizational objectives are achieved in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Responds to issues and inquiries from school district administrators and educators regarding development, implementation, and evaluation of programs in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
  • Facilitates and/or conducts in-service training programs for teachers and administrators for the purpose of providing information on current trends and educational and regulatory changes.
  • Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, making recommendations for hiring, evaluating, managing performance and/or conduct issues, scheduling work assignments, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel, and achieving objectives within budget and funding source requirements. 
  • Compiles data from a wide variety of sources for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with various policies and procedures, monitoring program components, and assisting with school improvement planning.
  • Facilitates and participates in meetings that may frequently involve a range of issues for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, conveying and gathering information, and serving as the NEWESD representative.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, and providing supporting materials for requested actions.
  • Researches information required to manage assignments including reviewing relevant policies, practices, curriculum and instructional programs, financial resources, etc. for the purpose of ensuring compliance with relevant requirements, securing general information for planning, taking appropriate actions, and responding to requests.
  • Serves as liaison between the state and local districts for the purpose of addressing matters related to education reform and state/federal accountability systems.
  • Supports the Board, superintendent, and department administrators for the purpose of collaborating with these administrators in achievement of department, program, and agency goals. 
  • Assists other personnel and departments as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: 

  • operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications,

  • making timely and accurate decisions, 
  • working with multiple projects, 
  • dealing with frequent interruptions and changing priorities, and
  • maintaining confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE is required to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, speak persuasively to implement desired actions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: 

  • pertinent codes, policies, regulations, laws, and current trends,
  • practices of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, and 
  • adult learning needs.

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and events, routinely gather, collate, and classify data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and groups, and work with data of widely varied types and purposes. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives, and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

  • managing/mentoring a highly-skilled staff to maximize individual strengths and address areas for growth, 
  • communicating with diverse groups, 
  • working as part of a team, 
  • developing innovative programs,
  • being flexible to changing conditions,

  • facilitating communication between persons with frequently divergent positions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives, managing major organizational components, and supervising the use of funds for multiple departments. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is routinely required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the agency’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience         

P-12 experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Education          

Master’s degree in job related area.

Certificates & Licenses   

Washington State administrative credentials.

Valid driver’s license and required auto insurance. 

Reliable personal transportation.

Continuing Education/Training

Maintain certificates and/or licenses. 

Clearances          

WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee’s expense).
