Position
The Corporate RSO (CRSO) serves as the principal health physics technical resource to company management providing guidance on radiation safety. Advises leadership on strategies and tactics relating to the technical and regulatory direction of the radiation safety program. This position is responsible for all facets of radiation safety and environmental compliance during the ongoing operation of the company, ensuring compliance with local state licenses, federal laws, policies, including DOT regulations.
The CRSO will direct and supervise employees in the performance of their duties related to radiation safety, regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Lead department in cross-functional activities within the company.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the department; interpret new and existing regulations, advise team members and leadership on technical and regulatory issues regarding the strategic direction of the radiation safety and environmental programs; apply strategic measures as appropriate.
- Participate as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and works closely with the RSC and executive management in implementing the radiation safety program.
- Manage programs of critical importance and work with leadership and individual employees in the development and implementation of new proposals as well as the coordination and administration of existing projects within the radiation safety program.

- Prepare reports and other forms of managerial, scientific or technical nature, including keeping current the NorthStar Radiation Safety Manuals and stand operating procedures as appropriate. Ensures an annual audit of the Radiation Safety Program is performed and results are communicated to the Executive Team.
- Oversee the use of radioactive materials at licensed company facilities through the management of radioactive materials licensing, radiation laboratory survey, and radioactive waste management programs.
- Responsible for management of the radiation safety training program to ensure that only authorized, qualified individuals work with radiation and limit radiation exposure to radiation workers.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory dose exposure limits as required.
- Oversee the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluate performance, set employee performance goals and make recommendations for personnel actions; motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance as related to the radiation safety program.
- May interpret new and existing regulations, develop or assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the company to ensure efficient safe company operations.
- Develop department budget and maintain awareness of department performance against budget performing operational adjustments as necessary to maintain budget compliance reporting as necessary to senior management.
- May represent NorthStar at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promote existing and new radiation safety and/or environmental programs and/or policies.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, physical or biological science, or Engineering and minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in a radiation safety role with at least five (5) years of that professional experience in health physics including at least three (3) years in applied health physics and a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 5 years of experience as an RSO. Training and experience must be sufficient to identify and control the anticipated radiation hazards. For example, experience planning and conducting evaluations, surveys, and measurements similar to those required by NorthStar licenses Radiation Safety Program. Full working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety regulations as provided in 29CFR1904 and 29CFR1910 as well as Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Title 10 Code of Federal Regulations along with knowledge of EPA regulations as pertaining to radioactive materials
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in Health Physics, physical or biological science, or Engineering and minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in a radiation safety role with at least five (5) years of that professional experience in health physics including at least three (3) years in applied health physics and a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with high-energy particle accelerators, radioactive material licensing, current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), developing radiation, chemical, and general safety programs.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP) and/or Certification as an Industrial Hygienist (CIH) would be a plus.
