What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head, Finance NIBR BD&L position at Novartis?
The Head, Finance NIBR BD&L will lead the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) Finance Team and partner closely with the Head of BD&L to:
a) Drive BD&L strategy
b) Enable/participate in senior management decision making related to all global NIBR licensing, collaboration, equity investment, divestment, out licensing and acquisition deals
c) Execute on deals through being a key negotiation partner and manage all pre- and post-transaction financials of NIBR deals
d) Drive key external benchmarking analysis included R&D productivity of external collaborations
Key to this position is to enhance the value of the NIBR portfolio through BD&L transactions (Acquisitions, In-/Out-licensing, Research Collaborations, Divestments, Equity investments, Other), and to develop the BD&L strategy for NIBR together with Head BD&L.
The BD&L team is a Global network with representation in Cambridge, Basel, California and China

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Define and Enable BD&L strategy
- Act as a trusted and respected advisor to NIBR senior management on all BD&L transactions under the “Open the Framework” collaboration strategy
- Create thoughtful financial deal structures; lead finance alignment with BD&L strategy in light of evolving P&L/BS/Cash Flow considerations
- Drive key external benchmarking analysis including R&D productivity of collaborations
Business Partnering
- Partner with BD&L management team to support negotiation, valuation and financial assessment of collaborations, tracking consistent and relevant deal comparables; resolving emerging alliance management topics with collaboration partners
- Coordinate relevant finance governance processes; evaluate and proactively communicate risks/opportunities and mitigation plans to management (e.g. Monthly NIBR Deal Committee meetings)
Lead the BD&L Finance FP&A function
- Ensure BD&L Finance team’s accountability and oversight for Strategic Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting for P&L/BS/Cash Flow, Monthly Reporting & Analysis, Public/Private equity management, and quarterly impairment and equity valuation processes
- Responsible to ensure final deal structure and terms comply with all internal and external accounting policies (Novartis Accounting Manual and IFRS).
- Liaise closely with other finance functions such as Financial Reporting and Analysis (FRA), Tax, Treasury, Group Finance, Country CFO teams, and Division BD&L and M&A Finance teams

- Master’s degree; MBA/CPA strongly preferred
- Successful execution of pharmaceutical/biotech licensing/ M&A deals
- Expert knowledge of financial concepts and accounting policies with respect to BD&L deals.
- Expert on licensing and collaboration deal contracts (financial structure & contract language)
- Leading multi disciplinary and global project teams to close transactions; manage deal portfolio; establish collaboration partnership
- Understanding of Legal, IP, Tax and accounting implications
- Preferred: work experience in multiple countries; cross-cultural experience is an asset
- 15 years of relevant business experience
