Job Description NREL is hiring an Engineering Group Manager to manage a team of 25 engineers and other professionals, projects, and other work assignments for the Site Operations Engineering group. The professionals this Management position will lead cover all engineering disciplines including energy engineering, as well as campus architecture, instrumentation and controls, cost estimation, and drafting/CAD. The Engineering group supports the maintenance, renovation, and construction of NREL’s facilities and infrastructure to further the mission and goals of the Laboratory including complex projects with high impact and visibility. The Engineering Group Manager reports to and will provide input to the Site Operations Center Director for the development of strategic and operations plans such as the Campus Master Plan. This position will lead the implementation of strategic plans affecting the Site Operations Engineering group. Job responsibilities include: Management and Teaming Engage with team members at multiple levels to deliver innovative engineering work products. Build strong working relationships and a positive work environment. Meet and exceed customer service expectations and priorities. Establish and communicate clear goals, objectives, and standards to the entire group, ensure resources are available, oversee accountability, and resolve issues in a timely manner. Represent NREL as its Chief Engineer for the Facilities and Operations Associate Lab Director and coordinate with other labs for sharing best practices, lessons learned, solving common problems, and improving processes. Engineering Operations Serve as the primary point of contact for all Site Operations engineering activities and designs completed by the engineering group and external A/E subcontractors. Oversee the scopes of work, services, and other engineering aspects of on-call service contracts such as Task Order Agreement Contractors, Task Order Agreement Design-Build Contractors, Subsurface Utility Engineering Service Agreement, and Materials Testing and Inspection Work Order Agreements. Oversee the quality of all facility engineering activities including design, utility coordination, and stakeholder management for all facility construction and special maintenance projects. Oversee all campus architecture activities including the design and functionality of interior workspaces and facility exteriors.Responsible for sustaining the design integrity of NREL’s built environment and compatibility with design and planning guidelines. Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in the applicant’s specific engineering discipline area. Develop and update guiding documents including the NREL design guidelines and standards, master construction specifications, the campus master plan, and best practices for functional areas within the group. Work with other SMEs to produce a comprehensive set of design and construction standards. Responsible for Engineering group’s financial performance including estimating annual budget and other resource needs. Supervisory Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and management of all Engineering group personnel and related non-labor resources. Oversee the interviewing, on-boarding, and training of employees, the planning of personal and group performance goals and objectives, annual personnel performance evaluations, compensation, and address personnel issues in timely manner. Confer with management and HR as necessary to discuss and resolve matters in accordance with company policy. . Basic Qualifications Previous management, budget development and/or significant leadership in an individual contributor role required. Degree in engineering in mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, or related field is required. Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices. Broad and in-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in the applicable field of expertise. Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills. Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills. Ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management. . Additional Required Qualifications Broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories, and concepts. Experience managing engineering disciplines related to facility management and construction. Superior interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively present technical engineering-related information to executive level management including our Department of Energy client, and other stakeholders. Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Job Profile: Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $130,600 - $235,100 NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
