Job Summary:
The Plant Specialist is a position intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in a power plant. This knowledge can be gained through experience or a combination of a college/technical training and experience. In this position the individual will be expected to provide advanced technical support for a given area or type of equipment in the plant. The role will include but not be limited to providing technical and project management support for the facility. This position is also responsible for maintaining Safety and Environmental compliance for the facility in accordance with NRG Standards and Policies.
The job level for this position will be based on education, skills, and experience.
The Walnut Creek Energy Station is located in City of Industry, CA.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform analysis in area of responsibility
- Perform field inspections, field measurements and equipment walk downs.
- Ensure company resources are used in a cost-effective manner
- Oversee, support, monitor, and emphasize the importance of safety and environmental programs and ensure regulatory compliance
- Participate and/or lead teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units (i.e., Root Cause Analysis)
- Initiate/participate in continuous improvement planning and implementation in assigned area of responsibility
- Prepare written reports in assigned area of responsibility
- Perform technical duties in area of specialization
- Coordinate activities with Vendors/Contractors, outside support groups, and other plant employees
- Perform Warehouse duties
- Provide technical support to plant operations and maintenance activities.
- Provide training to plant operations and maintenance employees (Safety, Environmental, Conduct of Operations, etc.). Provide training to help develop employees at the site in both Operations and Maintenance.
- Be proactive with problem recognition, using independent judgment to provide input on ways to solve them.
- Perform testing and analysis using various predictive maintenance technologies, including, but not limited to, vibration monitoring, infrared thermography, motor current analysis, ultrasonic monitoring, and equipment balancing and laser alignment
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date predictive maintenance databases
- Perform maintenance analysis studies, develop, and analyze databases, and prepare reports with recommendations using Work Management System as well as other available tools
- Evaluate preventative and predictive maintenance activities to identify and implement improved processes
- Provide technical input on due diligence efforts and new projects they arise
- Monitor and report project progress and health on regularly established intervals to NRG management.
- Fulfill all internal and external project and program tracking and reporting requirements. This includes Safety, Environmental, and NRG Program (OPO-026: Natural Gas Inspection, OPO-217: Structural Inspections…, etc.) Reporting
- Put form to and managing implementation of Special Projects including but not limited to developing scope, cost and schedule.
- Participate in the applicable internal and external user groups and implement industry best practices to the fleet as required.
Working Conditions:
- Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, hazardous chemicals, high noise areas, and elevations up to 100 feet.
- Work in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
- Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
- Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week,
- Open office environment when in office
- Operation of a personal computer.
- Limited business-related travel to NRG and vendor facilities.
Minimum Requirements:
- 2 years of technical training at an accredited university or technical institute and a minimum of 6 years of experience in area of specialization or High School diploma and 8 years of experience in a power plant focused on operations, maintenance, or technical field
- 2 years of experience managing projects and work packages
- Must have knowledge of Power Plant systems.
- Ability to work effectively in in-plant environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Gas Turbine plant experience
- LMS-100 operation and maintenance experience
- SAP or similar CMMS experience
- Planning and work-package development
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with breakers, exciters, generators, transformers, motors, switchgear, and miscellaneous electrical equipment
- Ability to provide technical support for electrical testing, inspection, repair and development / implementation of technical solutions of in-service power generation components
- Basic knowledge of power plant systems and operation consistent with level of responsibility
- Comprehensive knowledge of power plant systems and equipment in area of specialization
- Knowledge of and ability to apply applicable industry standards and codes
- Ability to use PC and associated software applications to collect and analyze data and produce spreadsheets, databases, and reports
- Ability to use basic math and algebra to perform calculations
- Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts (verbal and written)
- Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all individuals
- Ability to perform as a team member or leader in a cross-functional team environment and achieve consensus decisions
- Ability to support and maintain schedule on several concurrent assignments
- Ability to perform standard calculations in area of specialization
- Ability to read, create and follow written policies and procedures
- Ability to read, write and understand English
- Ability to transport and put in place test equipment
- Requires operation of a motor vehicle with a Valid Drivers License

Physical Requirements:
Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect and/or collect data on plant equipment.- May require lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
- Required use of PPE as specified.
