The Billing Specialist performs billing and collection functions for the agency including but not limited to processing, maintaining, and producing related billings, collections and electronic submission of claims. Responsible for coordinating quality care to patients in the managed care environment. Serves as a liaison between managed care and the agency providing consistent communication to clinical staff as well as advocating for patient/client needs.
Essential Functions:
- Verify insurance eligibility of patients/clients when requests for service as requested, Set up patient database in the billing system.
- Process all requests for service for patient/client insured through a provider. Prepare and process billing for assigned payors.
- Communicates, as appropriate, with referral sources, physicians and clinical staff concerning patient/client’s needs.
- Process and maintain billing transactions by weekly review of accounts receivable. Maintain on-going collection process, submit required correspondence, and maintain records of collection stats and write-offs.
- Apply cash receipts to appropriate accounts.
- Ensures that the documentation required for reimbursement of care is completed on a timely basis and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Assures agency compliance with all federal and state laws as well as adhering to the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association, Inc. corporate compliance policy in the prevention of fraud and abuse on behalf of the agency.
- Compile statistical reports for internal and external requirements. Compile audit reports and distribute them to appropriate managers.
- Works with the education of staff in providing an understanding of managed care insurance.
- Works in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient/client care through team meetings and case conferencing
Non-Essential Functions:
- Represent the agency on various committees and associations in the Agency and the communities.
- Participates in the evaluation of agency programs and the integration of programs into the agency’s philosophy.
- Keeps abreast of home health and management issues.
- Performs other Agency-related, as assigned.
Experience/Education:
- High School or higher education
- 4 plus years working experience
- Knowledge of Medicare reimbursement preferred
- Community Health or health care experience preferred
- Two (2) years of clerical office experience in the medical field
- Previous managed care experience a plus.
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Knowledge of automated systems
- Basic knowledge of third-party billing requirements
- Pleasant telephone manner
- Good computer, keyboarding skills and Spreadsheet familiarity (Excel)
- Ability to work under pressure; meet deadlines
- Strong organizational skills, decision making and problem solving skills
- Flexible, dependable, organized, detail-oriented
- Knowledge of Medicare and managed care preferred
- Able to effectively interact with management and staff
- Able to work with minimum supervision
