JOB CLASSIFICATION: Pharmacy Technician I
DEPARTMENT: Pharmacy STATUS: Non-Exempt
BASIC FUNCTION
The Pharmacy Technician I position is responsible for performing duties related to maintaining drug inventory, preparing and distributing medications, data processing, and a variety of other technical functions required in the operation of a licensed pharmacy. ThePharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and may perform duties that are not legally required to be performed by a registered pharmacist.
This position is accountable to the Director of Pharmacy in coordination with supervision by Staff Pharmacist(s).

Job Description – Pharmacy Technician I
Prescription Order Entry 1. Reviews and updates profiles for all pharmacy patrons.2. Processes new and refill prescriptions with attention to medication adherence, drug interactions and potential medication management service opportunities.3. Ensures that all medications leaving the pharmacy are appropriately billed, including adjudication from third party insurers and appropriate charges for patients with and without third party coverage.
Preparation of Medications1. Procures correct medications from pharmacy stock and accurately counts, measures and labels the medications prior to a final check and packaging.2. Prepares compliance packages of medications (punch cards, med boxes or similar devices).3. Reconstitutes medications according to manufacturer directions.
Maintenance of Drug Inventory 1. Responsible for maintaining contingency, non-controlled, drug supplies in skilled nursing home facilities including replacing and auditing all medications for expired or missing drugs.
2. Responsible for the drug ordering and stocking process with the intent of keeping inventory sufficient to meet pharmacy needs while allowing maximal turnover. Monitors inventory to ensure that all medications are in date and appropriate stored.
3. Carries out drug recall procedures upon notification from wholesaler, supplier or manufacturer.
Interaction with Customers (Primary responsibility)
1. Interacts in a friendly manner with all customers. Consistently strives to provide excellent customer service, including assisting customers with locating or procuring products.
2. Answers and processes telephone calls promptly, identifying self and pharmacy, and directs calls to appropriate personnel.
3. Maintains patient confidentiality and is compliant with all HIPAA standards.4. Prepares and processes deliveries as assigned, including delivering to resident apartments.
Contribution to the Effective Operation of the Pharmacy
1. Accurately completes logs, records and other documentation which are required by law, and maintains that documentation in appropriate locations.
2. Keeps pharmacy neat, clean, and well organized. Keeps all pharmacy equipment clean in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
3. Works cooperatively and interacts professionally with all staff, including pharmacy interns. a. Attends pharmacy staff meetings. b. Responds to conflict discreetly and appropriately. c. Accepts and supports change and new ideas. d. Acquires and applies skills needed to achieve quality outcomes with those changes.

4. Reports all resident and/or employee related incidents immediately, per policy.5. Ability to work in a partnership environment, which fosters effective team work in meeting the mission of Oakwood.6. Responsible for other similar duties as needed.
Maintaining Competence
1. Maintains familiarity with all store policies and procedures, state and federal laws, developments in the field, and pharmacy standards of practice that address activities involving pharmacy technicians.
2. Participates in all education and competency assessment requirements.3. Provides support and guidance for new employees and pharmacy interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ability to communicate orally (face-to-face and telephonically) and in writing with patients, staff, and area health professionals.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND/OR TRAINING
1. Certification through Certified Pharmacy Technician Board.2. High school education or equivalent required with a developed skill background in reading, writing, mathematics and written/verbal communication.3. Experience in clerical duties involving typing, filing, phone communications.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Physical requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers. May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 25 pounds). Ability to reach down to the floor and up to higher shelves to retrieve medications, and have the manual dexterity to handle small tablets and capsules, and to remove bottle caps. Walking and standing for long periods of time is often necessary.
2. Mental requirements: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English, perform basic math functions, and function well under stress.
3. Working/Environmental Conditions: A fast-paced, changing environment in which order must be maintained and multiple duties carried out quickly and accurately, all while potentially under stress. There are frequent interruptions, and the ability to adapt to changes in workload and work schedule is necessary.

4. Machines, Equipment, Tools Used: Computers (QS/1 for Windows, WholesalerWeb-based ordering system), Dispensing Equipment (Pillvac), Counting Trays.
5. Exposures: There is potential for exposure to infectious patients. And high-risk medications. There is potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.
