The Oberlin Studio Art department offers a creative platform for students who want intensive studio training combined with the intellectual rigor of a liberal arts curriculum. Oberlin artists are thinking artists, deeply engaged in their intellectual and creative pursuits. Our world-renowned faculty offer courses in painting, drawing, design, color theory, photography (wet and digital), sculpture, installation, media arts (sound, video, interactive/networked art), performance, reproducible media (screenprint, lithography, intaglio, relief, monotype, digital), and all the hybrids in between. Drawing on their parallel studies at Oberlin, our students produce work at the forefront of creative fields. Oberlin’s Studio Art curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature, and emphasizes ideas. Even skills-based courses use ideas as prompts, from the political histories of color to the concept of “nature” as it has been defined by landscape painting. Supporting our diverse mediums and the conceptual depth of our courses, our curriculum’s guiding structure is radically simple: physical dimensions. Our 2D courses focus on color, composition, design, and mediums on a flat plane; 3D courses emphasize tools and techniques to build in and re-envision in space; 4D courses address time-based media, and most digital mediums. By the time a student graduates from Oberlin’s Studio Art department—regardless of their primary medium—they will be fluent in visual languages across all (known) physical dimensions, preparing them to be critical thinkers and active participants in our 21st century visual world.
Responsibilities
The Studio Art 2D Studio Manager will support the Studio Art faculty/curriculum by managing supplies and classrooms in printmaking, drawing, painting, and design; while teaching up to one course a semester in foundational 2D skills. Working in tandem with faculty and staff, the incumbent will oversee the inventory, ordering, and distribution of art supplies for the department’s 2D curricular area, will be responsible for regular studio maintenance, and oversee classroom preparation between semesters. This position will work closely with the staff and faculty to oversee the Studio Art 2D facilities, communicate infrastructural needs related to facilities and equipment, collaborate on SDS material updates and other safety issues. The 2D Studio Manager will be part of a team that includes similar staff in the department’s 3D and 4D curricular areas, so the incumbent must demonstrate teamwork and general interdisciplinary art knowledge. The 2D Studio Manager will be in regular contact with Studio Art faculty to remain fluidly engaged with the coursework taking place in 2D classes, and to assist with equipment/material management related to those classes. This position includes teaching up to one course per semester in the foundational 2D curriculum and managing student workers in the area.
Essential Job Functions
The 2D Studio Manager will work with faculty to manage the Studio Art 2D budgets, which interface closely with the Studio Art Operations and Capital Budgets. In consultation with faculty in Printmaking, Drawing, Painting, and Design, as well as the 3D and 4D studio managers, the 2D Studio Manager will research cost-effective supplies; place orders via ObieBuy; receive and organize materials; and create “student supply kits” (as determined by faculty), to be ready by the beginning of the semester.
- In collaboration with professors in Printmaking, Drawing, Painting, and Design, along with the Studio Art Facilities Manager, the 2D Studio Manager will oversee the safety (as determined by OSHA and CAA), organization, use, materials, and maintenance of the 2D classrooms within the Studio Art Department. This includes the maintenance of repair records and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are accessible to Studio Art staff and students; ability to safely handle chemicals and potentially dangerous materials; and oversight of 2D studio safety.
- In consultation with teaching faculty and department staff, the incumbent will manage the end-of semester shut down of 2D classrooms and preparation of 2D studios between semesters. This includes making sure classrooms are clean, supplies are ready, and that all equipment is in operational order for each semester of classes. The incumbent will ensure 2D areas are appropriately stocked with shared supplies, tools, chemistry, and demonstration materials.
- Manage a small, centralized, art supply storeroom for student purchases during limited hours. The incumbent will order and stock faculty requested materials and tools; maintain an inventory; manage distribution; and follow a budget by maintaining detailed purchase records. Additionally, they will oversee a centralized collection of loanable 2D tools that are checked out within the Studio Art department. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Instruct students and oversee lab monitors who are trained in the safe use of 2D equipment and tools including (but not limited to) the following: printing presses, hotplates, plate shears, exposure units, paper cutters, carving tools, chemistry, and so on.
- The incumbent must be well-versed in printmaking processes and studio management for monotype, relief, screenprinting, foil, intaglio, lithography, and digital printing.
