Summary
The Electrical Apprentice is responsible for assisting the Electrician in completing work orders on electrical equipment/projects. This includes but is not limited to testing, troubleshooting and repairing. The Electrical Apprentice will also collaborate with other team members to identify and solve issues.
This is a safety-sensitive position.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety First – Put safety first and production second. Always.
- Read, interpret, and execute drawings, schematics, blueprints and NEC and specifications to see and plan layout of commercial electrical equipment installations.
- Test electrical equipment and parts for continuity, current, voltage and resistance.
- Install, repair, or replace electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, fiber optic, line assemblies, lighting, and alternative electrical parts in both AC and DC systems.
- Install, repair, or replace generators and industrial storage batteries.
- Perform preventative maintenance and testing of electrical systems both AC and DC.
- Install electrical circuits, as well as panels, conduit, protective devices, switches, and equipment required to accommodate the CEC and/or NEC.
- Work on electrical failures and replacements.
- Correct connections and wiring on equipment.
- Conduct preventative and maintenance programs, and keeps records of maintenance.
- Must continue to work towards training and certifications for work-related jobs.
- Ensure the highest level of safety and quality control requirements are upheld.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
- This job operates in a field environment. Must be in good physical condition with the ability to routinely bend, squat, climb, kneel, push, pull, lift 50lbs or more, lift in awkward positions, stand, and twist for extended periods.
- Must have sound vision to identify color and shading in wires, plans, and materials.
- Must be willing to travel out of market/state as needed.
- May be required to work long and unpredictable hours.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes DOT physical, background check, and drug/alcohol testing and participate in the random testing program.
- Must be willing to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive company vehicles. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Must be able to work in a team environment and be a valued member of the crew and the company.
- Read blueprints and schematics and use an array of tools and diagnostic devices to service and install electrical parts.
- Must be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.
- Able to bend conduit with hand or with mechanical benders.
- Capable and willing to dig trenches, either by use of hand tools or with power equipment.
- Must have successfully completed industrial first aid and rescue training.
- Must be able to read and understand drawings, piping diagrams, job specifications, mounting specs, testing procedures, etc.
Soft Skills:
- Must be able to communicate at a high level in person, by phone, and by email with team members and clients.
- Must be self-motivated with the desire to learn new things and project a positive attitude toward others in all work-related settings.
- Must be able to read, comprehend and carry out instructions.
- Must be able to work on a team and independently as required.
Supervisory Requirements
- None.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
- This is a full-time position.
- Workdays and hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some overtime requirements.
Travel
- Weekly travel is required for this position. Usually between 25 to 50% of the time.
Education and Experience
Required:
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
Desired:
- One or more years of apprentice electrician or higher experience.
