In this role The Bilingual Hospital Financial Counselor is responsible for screening patients to determine financial responsibility and the ability to pay for services (Point of Service Collections). The counselor adheres to collection guidelines/criteria as well as maintains compliance with self-pay payers in regards to federal, state, local and private regulations. In addition they assist potential eligible candidates with applying for State Medicaid programs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Ensure all insurance requirements are met and inform patients of their financial liability prior to or during admissions in the Emergency Room
- Request and collect needed verifications for processing
- Provide an accurate daily collections report to be shared with BIDMC and Change Healthcare
- Conducts analysis of patient's financial status and advises patient on the best course of action for payment of obligations to the hospital
- Advises patient of the possible consequences of non-payment
- Inform patient of the hospital sponsorship (Charity) application and explain the process
- Assist eligible self-pay candidates to complete Financial Assistance and submit State Medicaid applications

Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 years of customer service-related experience
- Experience with computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and data entry software
- Bilingual (Spanish and English)
- Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination, and boosters when applicable, prior to employment to ensure compliance. Candidates must be able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
Employees in roles that require travel will need to be able to qualify for a company credit card or be able to use their own personal credit card for travel expenses and submit for reimbursement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some college
- Comfort working in ER/Hospital setting
- Experience with MassHealth (Medicaid) and Charity Care (Financial Assistance) application process
- Experience in Healthcare and/or insurance billing
- Experience working with people of various educational and social economics background
- Proven time management skills and attention to detail
- Solid communication skills, work ethics, and confidentiality
