It is a point of pride that the Orvis DNA is rooted in a shooting and hunting heritage.   The singular role of the Orvis Gunsmith is multi-faceted: the Orvis Gunsmith works closely with the Orvis Gunroom Manager to complete all manner of gun repair and restoration, inspection of consignment firearms, and service of Orvis-owned sporting arms. Additionally, the Orvis Gunsmith assists the Gunroom Manager and Associates at our three Orvis Shooting Grounds in the support of customers who seek to buy a new or used gun, consign a gun, or accomplish gun repairs or alterations through Orvis. The Orvis Gunsmith is an authoritative resource, and an Associate who embodies the Orvis commitment to unrivaled product and service.   Orvis is committed to maintaining a reputation for excellence where gun sales and repairs are concerned. The ideal candidate for the Orvis Gunsmith role will bring to the position a sound understanding of the mechanics, functioning, and repair of sporting shotguns, hunting shotguns, and hunting rifles. The candidate will be driven to grow repair revenue and support gun sales while ensuring that Orvis remains a trusted and knowledgeable resource for new and existing gun customers. The candidate will be a strong team player and a self-motivated individual worker who is flexible enough to move seamlessly from the bench to the sales floor when asked. He or she will have familiarity with Excel, Word, and Smartsheet applications, will be willing to travel to Orvis Shooting Facilities and Endorsed Hunting Lodges at times, and will be willing to engage in the Federal Firearms License record keeping process. We believe the most meaningful experiences are created by sharing the love of nature and being inspired by its endless possibilities.   Who you will be working with: The Orvis Gunsmith will work closely with and report directly to the Orvis Gunroom Manager. The Orvis Gunsmith will also have regular interaction with and oversight from the Endorsed Operations Manager, the Orvis Adventures Analyst, the Senior Manager of Orvis Shooting Grounds, and other key associates in Orvis’ shooting-related businesses.   This position will currently be based in our Orvis Rod Shop in Manchester, Vermont.   What you will be working on: The Orvis Gunsmith will have a range of responsibilities, and an opportunity to work on projects and services that include: All manner of repairs on modern and vintage boxlock, sidelock, pump-action, and semi-automatic shotguns, as well as traditional single-shot, pump-action, bolt-action, and lever-action rifles; Stock and Woodwork including stock bending, refinishing, checkering, lengthening, shortening, and the application of leather-covered recoil pads; Machining and manufacture or retro-fitting of firing pins, draw bolts, basic screws, and springs. Aptitude with Lathe and Milling machine, and common machine tools; Evaluation of pre-owned or vintage guns to determine safety, functionality, and value; Maintenance of Federal Firearms License Repair and New Guns Sales book; Familiarity with major brands carried by Orvis, namely FABARM/Guerini/Syren, Beretta, Browning; Familiarity with major brands historically sold by Orvis, namely Beretta 680 platform, Arrieta, Grulla, AYA, Ruger; Maintenance of an inventory of gunsmithing materials, parts, and shop products; Oversight of gun repair tracking (incoming and outgoing repairs) and digital record-keeping of gun repair billing; General customer service as necessary.   How will we measure success: Success will be measured by positive customer feedback, record of efficiency, maintenance and cleanliness of shop workspace and contained tools, and 3% increased repair revenue by year two.   Skills that will be important in this role: Desire to communicate in a polite and courteous manner with Orvis Associates and customers; Promptness in terms of attendance, execution of tasks-at-hand, and response to Associate and customer inquiries; Clear written communication skills; Excellent phone communication skills; Time management; Desire to innovate; Willingness to be a team player; Willingness to spend time on the Retail Floor in order to assist sales.   Qualifications we are looking for: Ideally the Orvis Gunsmith will have earned certification from Accredited Gunsmithing School or have achieved equivalent hands-on experience. The candidate must present a portfolio with a body of work that showcases the skills required. As part of our process, candidates may be asked to spend an evaluation period of time at the bench within the interview process, possibly 1 day. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
