Historic Horticulturalist, Old Economy Village, Ambridge
Do you have a passion for gardens and garden research and love working with living plant collections? If so, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums (BHSM) is looking for a historic horticulturalist to manage the six-acre heritage landscape at Old Economy Village for current and future generations to experience and enjoy.
Old Economy Village is the historic home of the Harmony Society, one of the oldest and most successful religious communal groups of the 19th century. This six-acre National Historic Landmark welcomes thousands of visitors annually and features a modern visitor center, 13 historically significant buildings and two acres of historic gardens.
The Historical Horticulturalist is responsible for all aspects of restoring and preserving Old Economy Village’s historic gardens and landscape. The position performs professional horticultural work, including research to determine the type of plants that grew at Old Economy Village, garden planning and design, preparation, planting and care of plants, grass, trees, and shrubs, and the re-creation of gardens and landscape to resemble historical periods. The Historical Horticulturalist also assists in the development and delivery of educational programming centered on Old Economy Village’s historic gardens and landscape.
This is a professional horticultural position requiring a knowledge of 19th century gardens, and/or American garden history.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday – Saturday, with 60-minute lunch.
- Some weekend and evening work for programs and special events will be required.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Range: $47,472.00 – $72,176.00 Annually

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture with one year experience working in horticulture; or
- A Master’s Degree in Horticulture; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Other Requirements:
- This particular position also requires that applicants possess a valid PA Pesticide Applicator Certification.
- This particular position also requires that applicants possess a valid International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist Certification.
