Cardiopulmonary Manager
Full-Time
The Cardiopulmonary Manager provides direct patient care as appropriate, while directing and supervising the Respiratory Therapy Department. May also have oversight of ancillary services departments, to include laboratory and radiology, dependent upon hospital need and structure. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. \
RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient Care Functions
• Performs all scheduled and ordered therapies in a safe and timely manner.
• Ensures treatments are performed when scheduled.
• Performs and documents patient assessment with each treatment.
• Utilizes existing protocols to modify patient therapy as appropriate.
• Maintains complete and accurate records of all activities performed, ensuring treatments are documented in the patient record.
• Ensures all treatments and activities are charged as appropriate.
• Demonstrates proper use of the medication dispensing system, including accurate charging, removal/return of medications as appropriate.
• Performs all ventilator procedures accurately, safely, timely and completely.
• Assists with inventory and rental control.
• Assists in the maintenance and quality control program in the blood gas lab.
• Communicates with patients, families of patients, and/or caregivers and involves them in the decision-making related to the plan of care as appropriate to the patient population served.
• Completes patient/family teaching in all areas pertinent to the respiratory plan of care.
• Operates and maintains all respiratory therapy equipment; inclusive of routine preventive maintenance.
Department/Resource Management
• Manages respiratory care and laboratory (if appropriate) practice with responsibility for 24-hour coverage.
• Implements and evaluates the respiratory care delivery system utilized for pulmonary patients on the nursing unit(s) and in the outpatient clinics.
• Develops and reviews departmental policies and procedures annually and as needed.
• Sustains an environment that supports excellence in respiratory practice and care through planning and implementation of programs that support positive patient care outcomes.
• Translates institutional and professional respiratory values, goals and objectives to respiratory staff and interdisciplinary team members.
• Assures compliance with current standards of care established by the profession and regulatory bodies.
• Sets an example for staff through initiation of discipline-specific staff meetings, participation in inservices to disseminate professional and/or administrative knowledge/policies, and initiation of learning activities to increase understanding and update appropriate skills.
• Develops and assures implementation of mechanisms to provide mechanical respiratory support for inpatients including development of clinical guidelines for safe and efficient care provision.
• Coordinates the pulmonary rehabilitation program and assures appropriate staffing levels to maintain optimum goal accomplishment by patients in conjunction with other clinical disciplines.
• Actively participates in performance improvement activities to assure improved patient outcomes.
• Acts as the primary departmental liaison to physicians and other clinicians.
• Communicates the goals and plans of respiratory care to the nursing staff for follow-up during the absence of respiratory care staff.
• Monitors and implements charge master activities for the respiratory department and laboratory (if appropriate).
• Assures the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of charge capture, per all applicable policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Training: Licensed/certified to practice respiratory care by the state in which hospital resides. BLS and ACLS certification required.
**Supervisor blood gas licensure required if employed in the state of Nevada.**
Experience: Minimum of three to five years of experience in cardiopulmonary activities required. Minimum of one year experience in a supervisory capacity preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to effectively express ideas and views for communication with clinical care providers, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, visitors, staff members, and vendors.
• Read and write English language including medical terminology and abbreviations.
• Clerical ability to write reports, memoranda, etc.
• Cognitive ability to operationalize the basic principles of management and interpret and present data.
• Organizational ability to direct and motivate professional and non-professional staff in performance of patient care.
• Strong clinical, leadership, and management skills along with a high level of initiative and creative problem-solving.
• Capacity to relate to people in a manner to win confidence and establish rapport.
• Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and the various details of the job.
• Working knowledge of the cardiopulmonary system and all modalities of respiratory care.
• Working knowledge of respiratory therapy equipment, i.e., portable pulmonary function spirometer, pulse oximeter, oxygen analyzers, ventilators, and various other respiratory care and laboratory equipment necessary to function safely and effectively.
