SUMMARY
The Design Engineer – Level 2, with supervision, is responsible for the successful overall design of varied components, subassemblies, and complete units. As an active participant in design review sessions, the incumbent’s responsibilities include making recommendations for product testing and product tolerance standards as well as consistently offering suggestions for component standardization between families of product systems. In addition, the Design Engineer-2 is responsible for conducting research for the analysis of new materials and/or product design.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Design and Development
- Responsible for the overall design of varied components, subassemblies, and complete units utilizing the latest design tools
- Works with vendors in the development of tolerance standards and makes appropriate recommendations; understands and effectively applies standards to product design.
- Recommends components for the standardization between families of product systems
- Participates in design review sessions and communicates project status to supervisor, co-workers and management
- Expands working knowledge of aluminum and vinyl extrusion materials; extrusion processes, glass and glazing systems
Evaluation, Analysis, and Testing
- Initiates and evaluates the use of outside resources including the internet, vendors, standard testing procedures and test agencies to aid in design and testing of new products
- Conducts and/or directs research and testing for the analysis and approval of new materials and/or product design
- Recommends general standards for product testing (in-house and formal lab tests); which requires obtaining sample plans, building prototypes, scheduling tests and communicating results
- Follows established procedures
Reporting, Communicating, and Change Management
- Collaborates fabrication requirements with Tooling and Process Engineering staff for tool design, plant layout and process flow
- Recommends changes in procedure and communication formats used between departments
- Offers suggestions on changes for documentation, specifications and training materials
- Recommends and makes changes in temporary deviations, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), B.O.M., and drawing standards
- Supports strategic action plans. Assists leader in the development of strategic plans.
- Manages the monthly reporting process / scheduling and assists in the quarterly forecasting

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- 1 to 3 years professional experienced design engineer with BS degree preferably in Mechanical Engineering (related college degree considered) or equivalent work experience.
- Knows and applies fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; utilizing mechanical engineering principles of strengths of materials, mechanical engineering design, heat transfer, statistics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Proven proficiency in AutoCAD and Inventor Software or proven ability to obtain proficiency with-in first year.
LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must write clearly and concisely
- Must use courtesy and tact with internal and external customers
