Position Summary :
The Activity Assistant assists the Activity Director to provide group and individual activities for the residents. Duties will involve personal contact with a varying resident population and a varied work schedule that will include some weekends, evening and holidays.
Tasks also will involve record keeping, attention to the environment, use of supplies and equipment and maintenance of storage areas.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent. Preference is given to persons with experience in long term setting and / or certification as a State Tested Nursing Assistant.
- Verbal and writing abilities necessary to communicate and work effectively with various levels of staff, residents, family members and the public.
- Motor coordination and manual dexterity are required to lead activity programing.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow activity directions and work assignments. Able and willing to work flexible hours, such as during an emergency situation.
Must be patient and tolerate toward residents, family members and co-workers.
Ability to work independently and follow scheduled plans.
Duties
- Assist with activities as directed by the Activity Director and in accordance with each resident’s plan of care.
- Group Activity
- Set up areas as needed for the type of activity planned
- Remind nursing staff of activities scheduled and residents who desire to attend.
- Invite all appropriate residents to attend group.
- Assist residents who desire to participate to group.
- Follow the instructions for the activity as instructed.
- Encourage and praise resident’s response throughout activity.
- Observe individual resident participation and responses during activity.
- Assist residents back to living areas at the conclusion of the activity.
- Notify nursing of resident behaviors during program that were unusual or disruptive.
- Complete documentation and recordkeeping tasks. Clean activity area.
- Individual Activity
- Interact appropriately and effectively in one to one activities according to the resident’s strengths and limitations.
- Be aware of resident’s individual cognitive, emotional and psychosocial impairments.
- Keep records of sensory stimulation or other type of activity and resident’s response.
- Chaperone scheduled activities away from facility grounds as directed.
- Help maintain a pleasant and cheerful environment.
- Assist with putting up and taking down seasonal and other decorations.
- Help care for plants and facility pets.
- Encourage residents to personalize their rooms and assist with hanging calendars, clocks, cards or other mementos in their room in a safe manner.
- Deliver and read mail as needed.
- Participate and promote staff participation in facility-wide special activities / events such as dress-up days and special observances like National Nursing Home Week and holidays.
- Notify Activity Director of supplies or equipment needs, report equipment breakdowns and unsafe conditions to Activity Director.
- Clean equipment and work areas as assigned by the Activity Director.
- Be knowledgeable of Federal, State, and facility’s rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Attend in-service educational programs.
- Follow defined safety codes while performing all duties.
- Understand facility’s fire and disaster plans; follow established procedures during drills and actual emergencies.
- Follow facility Infection Control policy.
- Ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
- Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the Dietary Manager.
- Maintains compliance with all HIPAA regulations.
- Ability to accept assigned duties in a cooperative manner.
- Ability to assume accountability for all data contained in the employee’s handbook.
- Perform other department duties assigned by the Activity Director.
