PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

To plan and manage the Grocery Department so as to promote sales and achieve profit margins and labor goals. To contribute toward ensuring a positive shopping environment for customers and a positive working environment for associates.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Emphasis in this position is on ongoing department planning, execution and evaluation in order to ensure maximum sales and profit opportunities, effective cost control, efficient utilization of labor and strong customer service levels. Primary challenge is consistently meeting or exceeding department profit and labor goals. This position is responsible for providing effective training, development and work direction for department associates and requires ability to encourage individuals and group effort toward department objectives. This position requires ongoing judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, reading, writing, math, moderate to heavy lifting, walking, operation of forklift, pallet jack and box cutter. Position functions and hours may vary according to business needs. Assignment and work direction are provided by the Store Director or person in charge.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

1. Implements and maintains coordinated, aggressive and creative merchandising plans using Division guidelines which maximizes sales, variety and gross profit - Consistently monitors mix of demand and profit items, shelf allocation, variety, movement and stock levels to properly order, merchandise and meet sales and gross profit goals

- Ensures proper product quality, presentation and rotation

- Assists with production, stocking and display building

- Observes and enforces all local, state and federal laws and regulations - Maintains a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times to set an example for others to follow, to enforce Company dress and grooming standards

- Actively supports the Store Director in the fulfillment of his/her responsibilities in planning, organizing, directing and controlling store activities and operations

2. Supervises Grocery associates to ensure efficient labor utilization and effectiveness in meeting department objectives.

- Effectively communicates tasks and priorities

- Follows up to ensure proper task completion and adheres to store and

department policies and procedures

- Monitors sales per man-hour and payroll, and adjusts labor to production and work needs

- Ensures customers receive prompt and friendly service and assistance from all department associates

- Ensures proper product handling to control shrinkage and waste

3. Monitors Grocery Department receiving, invoicing, pricing, shrink control and inventory to ensure proper product control and that gross profit goals are met - Supervises and assists to ensure accuracy and organization of receiving function - Processes invoices accurately and timely, checks credits and transfer slips for accuracy and verifies purchase journal against receiving records

- Takes accurate inventory

- Collaborates with Pricing Department to ensure department pricing and signing is accurately maintained for all items, and monitors price sensitive items in the market.

4. Supervises department safety and sanitation programs

- Ensures all associates are properly trained in equipment use, maintenance and sanitation standards, proper lifting and all related safety rules and procedures

- Ensures no one under 18 years of age operates hazardous equipment

- Conducts department inspections and maintains safety checklist

- Reviews insurance allocation reports and itemized statements of loss reports

5. Performs Grocery Department personnel functions

- Ensures all new associates are properly trained to ensure competence in positions and for possible future development

- Conducts and ensures all probationary and regular performance appraisals are completed

- Provides individual and group guidance and encouragement toward department objectives

- Recommends and administers corrective actions as appropriate

Functional Requirements

Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying 20 to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling 300 to 2500 lbs.; equipment operation (box cutter, flatbed, forklift, pallet jack, intercom, telephone, register, scanner), reaching, squatting, kneeling, stooping/bending, turning, walking

Mental - memorization, equipment operation (calculator), math

reading, writing, judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction

Occasional: Physical - crawling, climbing ladders, walking on uneven ground

6. Follows all store and department policies and procedures

7. Education and/or Experience

-High school education (or concurrent enrollment in an educational institution) preferred but not required

-Should have at least three years experience in the supermarket industry with successful participation in a management training program or five years experience coupled with active participation in a concurrent management training program; or equivalent combination of education and experience -Should have a comprehensive working knowledge of all aspects of store management and operations

-Should have some experience in handling personnel relations or Human Resources; some academic exposure or background in this area also desirable but not required

8. Mathematical Skills

-Must possess the math skills necessary to supervise and handle sales transactions, tender change, evaluate inventory reports to implement corrective measures if required, and analyze receiving logs
