JOB DESCRIPTION

Mechanic

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Director of Public Works


(Teamsters Local Union 205)


VALID CLASS "A" CDL REQUIRED

ROLE SUMMARY

 

Borough mechanics are responsible for maintaining and repairing all Borough vehicles and mechanical equipment. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Perform skilled mechanic work.

  • Perform state vehicle inspections and necessary emissions testing at required intervals within 30 days of inspection expiration.
  • Conduct vehicle and equipment safety inspections on a regular basis.
  • Repair and maintain Borough vehicles and equipment including cars, trucks, and construction and snow removal equipment.
  • Repair or replace parts as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all Borough vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot problems.
  • Maintain lawn mowers and other grounds equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Maintain accurate records and paperwork.

  • Complete a repair order within 24 hours of all repairs performed.
  • Keep maintenance and repair records.
  • Make reports to highway patrol regarding state inspections.
  • Utilize purchase order system to order new parts.


Operate related hand and power tools and materials.

  • Operate crack welding equipment.
  • Utilize electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment to discover problems.


Other

  • Additional tasks as requested by the Borough Manager and Director of Public works.
  • Occasionally perform custodial tasks.
  • Complete frequent activity reports.
  • Additional functions as related to job assignment.
  • Required to submit to random drug testing.



QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE)

 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Five years of experience in a public works or related field involving the maintenance and repair of light trucks, heavy construction equipment, and other automobiles.

    • Ability to follow established safety standards.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License and a valid Class A CDL.
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania inspection license.

  • Ability to operate all types of Borough vehicle, Ability to operate all necessary tools such as jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other relevant equipment and tools; Ability to stand, Ability to Walk, Ability to use both legs, Ability to use both hands, Ability to communicate orally, Ability to hear conversation.

Frequently Incurred (Between 25% - 75% of time on job)        

  • Repetitive movement, Ability to carry/push/pull, Ability to climb stairs, Ability to stoop, Specific visual requirements, Use of depth perception.

Occasionally Incurred (Less than 25% of time on job)

  • Ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds, Ability to reach at high or low levels, Ability to pull hand over hand, Ability to balance, Repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands, Ability to repeatedly bend, Ability to operate truck/motor vehicle, Ability to work extended hours, overtime, and weekends; Ability to be on call 24 hours a day.

 

The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock.  The noise level in the work environment is often loud. 


PERSONAL PROTETIVE EQUIPMENT TYPICAL OF THIS POSITION


  • Safety glasses, ear plugs, steel-toed boots, and other safety equipment are often required.
