The Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the overall operation of the Health Services department in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing the Community and as may be directed by the Executive Director or Health Services Administrator and the Medical Director, to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained. Advances the value that the resident comes first. The employee values the Community as the residents’ home and works to create attributes of home and models person centered care.
Education, Experience and/or Training:
- Must possess a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university or be a graduate of an approved RN program.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing desired.
- Must possess a current active license to practice as a RN in this state.
- Previous experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care community or other related health care facility. Previous geriatric nursing experience desired.
- Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages the selection, evaluation, retention, budgeting and staffing requirements to meet the total health care needs of the residents.
- Ensures nursing staff stays current in relevant rules, regulations and guidelines necessary to effectively provide quality resident care. This may include training, interpreting and offering of guidance as necessary.
- Participates in Community surveys, inspections, and investigations as necessary. Works with Community and corporate staff in developing a plan of correction for deficiencies.
- Communicates with residents, resident families, and physicians as necessary for effective quality care, treatment, etc.
- Makes rounds to ensure nursing staff perform their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and resident choices. Appropriately monitors that residents are treated with kindness, dignity and respect and that care needs are met.
- Ensures health services team have adequate equipment, supplies, medications, training and staff to adequately meet the needs of the residents and their plans of care.
- Effectively creates systems and adapts daily routines and person-centered care practice to accommodate resident preferences.
- Manages the individualization of care practices using evidence-based practice and nursing judgment.
- Identifies leadership characteristics/abilities to promote person centered care. Empowers and supports the care team in planning, implementing and evaluating person centered care for residents in partnership with residents, resident families and team.
- Provides professional guidance regarding physical care needs, medical information and the risks and benefits of choices and approaches.
- Reviews and provides complaint reports to administration as appropriate.
- Ensures assigned staff follows established universal precautions, safety and sanitation procedures and regulations.
- Values and respects the choices and preferences of residents and works to create attributes of home, with emphasis on person centered care.
