Job Summary
Under the direction of a pharmacist, performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures, and participates as an active member of the pharmacy team to provide safe, rational and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. Accountable for pharmacy services that require advanced training in pharmacy automation. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the pharmacy's automated systems are functioning in a safe and efficient manner. Serves as a mentor for pharmacy automation. Advocates for safe medication practices and assist with the development of new procedures.- Maintains AutoMed/Pyxis Automation
a) Completes scheduled preventative maintenance for AutoMed/Pyxis devices
b) Orders all consumables (paper, ribbon, canister, etc.)
c) Assist with database management and with updates and changes
d) Assist with barcode validation
e) Generate barcodes for any product
f) Demonstrates compliance to policies and procedures. 20%- Maintains MedCache/Pyxis Automation
a) Troubleshoots MedCache/Pyxis for proper operation.
b) Maintain par levels and inventory and supplies
c) Fill medication carts
d) Demonstrates compliance to policies and procedures. 10%- Understands and assist with other automated systems in the department.
a) Troubleshoot for the BMV/Meditech/Atheon TUG.
b) Train staff on the proper use of the BMV/TUG.
c) Assist with automated IV compounding equipment. 5%
- Actively participates in training personnel in automation systems. 5%
- Accurately interprets and prepares medication orders.
a) Accurately fills physician orders, automated dispensing devices and stock requisitions.
b) Fills patient medication cossettes.
c) Restocks medications in assigned areas.
d) Demonstrates compliance to all regulations and policies related to controlled substances.
e) Delivers medication and supplies to patient care areas. 10%
- Assist purchasing to maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies.
a) Assists in unpacking and storing of pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
b) Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date,
c) Restocks medications in all dispensing areas.
d) Assists with determining optimal inventory placement for improved efficiency. 15%- Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
a) Utilizes personal protective equipment and products appropriately.
b) Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
c) Prepares all IV's using aseptic technique.
d) Conducts and documents quality assurance activities required by the department.
e) Participates in annual mandatory education and competency assessment as required by the department and health care system.
f) Receives complaints and communicates to supervisor.
g) Participates in staff meetings, in-services and training programs. 5%- Sterile compounding
a) Demonstrates proficiency with aspectic IV technique
b) Demonstrates proficiency with Low and Medium Risk compounds sterile products
c) Demonstrates proper use of IV compounding equipment
d) Demonstrates proficiency with compounding hazardous drugs. 10%- Demonstrates competency in Tech-Check-Tech functions
a) Accurately checks products filled by another technician or pharmacist
b) Accurately prioritizes and stages completed work ready for delivery.10%
Other (explain) - Graduation from a Pharmacy Technician training program
3 years- Hospital Pharmacy- Acute Care to include a minimum of 6 months experience with pharmacy automation systems.
In lieu of a pharmacy technician training program, 1 year acute care hospital pharmacy technician experience will be accepted, in addition to the 3 years of pharmacy technician experience.
Completion of additional training certifications from Automation Suppliers- Preferred
Must be able to lift 35 pounds- Required
Must be able to spend the bulk of their shift walking or standing- Required
