Project Lazarus Peer Guide Overview
Project Lazarus Peer Guides work with those who have a substance use disorder and would benefit from addiction support in their recovery efforts. Peer Guides share their own experiences and what skills, strengths, supports, and resources they use. Peer Guides function as a credible role model and coach to the people he or she will be supporting. Peer Guides understand that there are many paths to recovery and will support each person’s freedom to choose which path they will take.
Requirements
*A minimum of 2 years continuous recovery from all mood altering drugs unless otherwise prescribed by a physician
*Familiar with recovery-oriented systems of care across a multi-county service area.
*Recommended by a recovery-oriented treatment organization.
*Familiar with overdose prevention and harm reduction.
*People-oriented with good crisis intervention skills.
*Willingness to work odd hours from time to time
*Good judgment and active listening skills
*Organized, ability to keep records and complete necessary paperwork in a timely manner
*Willing to present project goals and objectives to agencies for referrals
*Strong verbal and written communication skills.
*Proficient computer skills (MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint).
*Valid NC Driver’s license, good working vehicle, proof of car insurance.
*High School Diploma or GED
*Current NC Certified Peer Support Specialist, or be willing to attain - with all requirements to meet criteria for certification
Preferred Qualifications:
*Associates Degree.
*Extensive knowledge of community resources (across a 10-county region) and behavioral health challenges, including knowledge of the impacts of mental illness, domestic violence, and the dynamics of addictive behavior.
*Familiarity with various ethnic and cultural groups, as well as the rural Appalachia lifestyle.
*Willingness to participate in ongoing training.
