Reporting to the CPO/President, the Executive Director of Philanthropy for Providence Mission Hospital Mission Viejo (Mission Hospital) Foundation serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the Foundation. In partnership with the CPO/President, this position is responsible for fundraising and development of major gift activities related to Mission Hospital's key Institutes, service lines, campuses, and relevant medical programs.

The Executive Director will also work closely with the Foundation Board of Directors, Senior Director of Philanthropy, Campaigns and Senior Director of Philanthropy, Donor Relations. The Executive Director will mentor and coach the philanthropy officers (development officers) and respective support staff on the major gifts team to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors, and identify opportunities to strengthen, leverage and engage the organization's constituents and volunteers in meaningful ways. The Executive Director leads a multi-year effort to substantially grow the Foundation's annual philanthropic support. As part of the Foundation's leadership team, the Executive Director shall assist with developing a system-wide philanthropy vision and strategy aligned with the Foundation's strategic goals and priorities. The Executive Director shall assist in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, directing and evaluating all the Foundation's major gift activities to ensure all short and long-term objectives are fully achieved. The Executive Director develops new and more diverse sources of philanthropic support by emphasizing major gifts and seven figure transformational gifts in order to generate an ROI that justifies a growing investment of resources in the Foundation's fundraising capacity. The Executive Director drives and implements a culture of philanthropy throughout Mission Hospital, and works closely with Institute leadership, physician leaders and other caregivers to improve and expand the Foundation's grateful patient fundraising programs. At all times, the Executive Director partners with Foundation leadership to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward key individuals, foundations, corporations and others. The Executive Director manages a portfolio of approximately 50 major/principal gift – level prospects and donors and is responsible for achieving a personal philanthropic revenue goal each year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • DONOR EXPERIENCE:
  • Cultivates and promotes an innovation-driven philosophy in all donor identification, cultivation, and solicitation and stewardship activities across the Foundation.
  • Creates a structure for donors enabling easy access along the giving continuum.
  • Preserves donor intent through a culture of accountability for transparency in all Foundation fundraising activities.
  • Manages a portfolio of donors and achieves annual metrics for donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Adheres at all times to the principles contained in the Donor Bill of Rights
  • PHILANTHROPY OPERATIONS:
  • Shall assist the CPO/President with developing, monitoring and managing the major gifts cost center associated with the Foundation budget.
  • Aligns all short-term and long-term fundraising priorities, activities, budgets and goals with Mission Hospital’s strategic goals and priorities.
  • As part of the Foundation leadership team, standardizes all fundraising and business practices across the system including appropriate metrics to measure success.
  • Utilizes the latest technology to create, manage, and monitor a robust pipeline of donor prospects across the system.
  • Ensures legal compliance through appropriate best practice system-wide fundraising policies, procedures and processes.
  • COMMUNICATION:
  • Works closely with the Foundation CPO/President to develop messaging and communications that are consistent with all Foundation initiatives and priorities.
  • Builds relationships to engender the trust and confidence of internal and external stakeholders including Mission Hospital leadership, staff, volunteers and donors across the organization.
  • Work closely with Foundation Board, CPO, and Physician groups to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies consistent with the goals of the Foundation.
  • Serves as a face of Providence Mission Hospital Mission Viejo Foundation philanthropy to internal and external audiences.
  • Partners with marketing and communications to better articulate the case for healthcare philanthropy and philanthropic support for the Foundation.
  • Celebrates and shares stories of philanthropic success across Mission Hospital.
  • LEADERSHIP/TEAM DEVELOPMENT:
  • Serves as a prominent healthcare philanthropy leader and visionary of the Foundation’s leadership team.
  • Develops a highly functioning organizational and major gifts fundraising team, supporting the key Institutes and campuses at Mission Hospital.
  • Leads and motivates a highly effective and efficient unified approach to Mission Hospital philanthropy.
  • Builds a positive and effective work culture at the Foundation.
  • Oversees a team of fundraisers with the collective goal of expansion of the major gifts program in alignment with the goals associated with the comprehensive campaign.
  • Provides fundraising and consultative services to Mission Hospital's service lines and volunteer campaign committees regarding strategic planning and positioning activities to optimize fundraising potential including the recruitment of new Board members and committee members.
  • Works with CPO and hospital and foundation leadership to provide vital input in short-and long-term strategic planning and positions, and implementation of the organization’s long-term fundraising strategies associated with the comprehensive campaign.
  • Leads the development team to secure funding from a mix of institutional and individual donors through major gift initiatives tailored to the needs and vision of the organization with the goal of attracting, retaining and engaging donors.
  • Engages with institute and physician leaders to strategically align with institutional priorities.
  • Provides innovative leadership in order to coach and develop all frontline fundraisers and develop performance metrics directly related to Foundation fundraising goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Master's Degree (preferred)
  • 10 or more years of professional fundraising experience in directing major gift programs and capital and/or comprehensive campaigns, as well as direct experience managing a large team of development officers with diverse department functions.
  • 10 or more years of management level experience in a sophisticated, major gifts-oriented development shop with preference for healthcare or higher education experience
  • Experience in Blackbaud CRM (preferred)
  • Personal ability to strategize on, cultivate, close and steward seven and eight figure gifts from philanthropists.
  • Interest, enthusiasm and affinity for fundraising and building relationships.
  • Extensive knowledge of the process of philanthropy, including annual, major, capital and planned giving fundraising activities and best practices, as well as the many nuances involved.
  • Understanding of the process and skills required in successfully identifying, qualifying, and developing relationships with high potential donors and prospects.
  • Knowledge of best practices in fiscal management and return on investment in philanthropic infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of marketing and public relations and their implications/relationship to philanthropy
  • Exemplary leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor individuals in a changing environment while increasing performance.
  • Strong collaborator with exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to build trust through leadership and ethical decision-making.
