Under the direction of the Anesthesiologist, and/or Surgeon, the Lead Perfusionist executes extracorporeal support in the care of patients undergoing open heart surgery. This entails the safe and effective manipulation of sophisticated perfusion equipment used in maintaining adequate physiological parameters. The Lead Perfusionist is required to assimilate all available information, make prompt clinical assessments and take the appropriate action. Such circumstances demand that the Lead Perfusionist know the limitations and hazards of all techniques, components, and principles of extracoporeal support of open heart surgery. Responsible for the day to day clinical perfusion operations. This includes staffing issues, communications with anesthesiologists, surgeons, clinical managers, and other members of the health care team, and being a clinical resource for the staff.

- Performs preoperative assessment and chart review for current and prior cardiac history as it relates to a cardiac patient undergoing open heart surgery.
- Correctly calculates perfusion parameters.
- Correctly mixes and labels drugs/solutions required.
- By utilizing the preassessment, the surgeon’s preference, and the anesthesiologist’s preferences, to determine a plan for the cardiopulmonary bypass care.
- Competently calibrates and determines the correct function of all laboratory devices utilized during open heart surgery.
- Competently calibrates and determines the correct function of all equipment prior to placing the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Maintains the availability of the appropriate equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Maintains all perfusion equipment in good working order.
- Selects the proper equipment based on patient assessment, procedure, review of the patient chart, and conference with the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
- Competently administers drugs, solutions, blood, and blood products as prescribed.
- Monitors the patient physiologically while on cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and effective care while maintaining a patient on cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Assists the department manager with the selection and evaluation of supplies and equipment.
- Assists the department manager with capital and operational budget issues.
- Monitors and maintains perfusion quality improvement and infection control projects.
- Has direct input in staff selection, annual evaluations, and staff education.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Science, Perfusion Technology
- Graduate of an accredited school of perfusion technology
- Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association
- Upon hire: National Certified Clinical Perfusionist - American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
- 5 years Current open heart clinical experience, as a certified clinical perfusionist
