Job Description Summary: The Associate Director, Chemistry is responsible for leading medicinal chemistry efforts in a fast-paced small molecule discovery research organization. The Associate Director, Chemistry will lead a team of medicinal chemists helping guide the rational design of new agents for the potential treatment of a range of indications. The candidate will apply modern techniques in organic chemistry and utilize current medicinal chemistry practices to solve problems relevant to the assigned projects. For this position it is required to have demonstrated strong collaborative characteristics, since the drug discovery team will consist of scientists from Biology, Pharmacology, DMPK, Toxicology and Legal all working to advance projects from inception to clinical proof of concept. The Associate Director, Chemistry, provides strategic, scientific, and technical leadership to a medicinal chemistry team at PTC. The incumbent is committed to mentorship of direct reports to enable them to do their best work and develop leadership skills. Job Description: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Primary duties/responsibilities: Lead a medicinal chemistry project team in a fast-paced, results-driven environment. Design, implement and execute medicinal chemistry strategies. Provide strategic and scientific leadership to overseas CROs to expeditiously deliver high quality and results-focused test compounds and intermediates. Collaborate effectively with the leadership team and other departments and functions. Independently plan, initiate, and execute synthetic organic chemistry experiments with high efficiency. Interpret and communicate key results as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Manage and direct the efforts of junior chemists. Present findings internally to cross-functional teams. Participate in patent strategy discussions and assist in writing patent applications. Help assure that laboratories abide by all safety and regulatory guidelines. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED Track record of consistent and successful drug discovery accomplishments (e.g., key contributions to optimization efforts, patent inventorship, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications) Deep understanding of synthetic and medicinal and chemistry concepts with high lab productivity Experience with medicinal chemistry strategies to optimize the characteristics of molecules (e.g. potency, solubility, stability, absorption, etc.) Strong communication skills Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment. Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills * Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
