SUMMARY

Sehat Initiative (SI), a program of the Public Health Institute (PHI), has been established in response to the humanitarian and healthcare needs of refugees. The focus of SI is to improve the health and well-being of refugees in California and throughout the United States. Founded by medical and public health experts from within the refugee community, SI serves as a crucial bridge between refugees and their wider medical and social environment. SI projects are implemented in close collaboration with refugees, community-based organizations, researchers, and academic institutions.

Position Summary

This 100% FTE position works for the Afghan Refugee School Impact - Support to Schools (ARSI-S2S) project. The Refugee Health Navigator will work directly in the refugee communities to build refugees' understanding of the US Local Education System (LES), assess the health needs and interests of Afghan refugee children and youth, and support their integration in society.

This position works directly with the staff of Sehat Initiative, school districts, and other community-based organizations (CBOs) that collaborate with Sehat Initiative to provide support to refugees. Responsibilities include but are not limited to development of educational materials and workshops for refugee families and school districts; administrative support; community outreach; data collection; and assessment of health needs of refugee children and youth.

This is a regular full-time position that is expected to work 40 hours per week. This is a hybrid position, and the employee will be required to maintain a home-based work location as well as travel to various in-person work sites in the state of California. In-person work sites include but are not limited to school districts, community-based organizations, community events, and more. This position reports to the project manager and regularly interfaces with external partners. The Refugee Health Navigator will spend up to 50% of their time in the community.

Full pay range for this position: $23.06 to $32.12 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is from $23.06 (minimum) to $27.59 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assess the health needs and interests of Afghan refugee children and youth, using this information to inform the design and implementation of health education programs and initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver health education workshops, seminars, and other events, utilizing a variety of formats and techniques to engage school district staff, Afghan families, and Afghan children and youth and promote learning.
  • Collaborate with resettlement agencies, faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, community leaders, and stakeholders to identify opportunities for partnership to maximize the reach and impact of health education efforts and to identify additional services available to refugees.
  • Research, evaluate, and adapt evidence-based health education strategies, tools, and resources, ensuring that programs are current, relevant, and culturally appropriate. This includes evidence-based practices related specifically to refugee children and youth.
  • Develop and disseminate health education materials, such as brochures, posters, and online resources, ensuring that information is accurate, accessible, and engaging to Afghan refugee children, youth, and families.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that promote health equity and remove barriers to health education and access related to Afghan refugee children, youth, and families.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date program documentation and reporting, ensuring compliance with relevant funder, regulatory, and organizational policies.
  • Conduct data collection activities through various methods, including interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys to gather relevant data.
  • Travel to various in-person work sites in the state of California.
  • Work outdoors under typical seasonal weather conditions as necessary.
  • Perform occasional weekend and/or evening work as requested at staff events or programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in healthcare, public health, training, public policy, and/or health education.
  • High School Diploma.
Other Qualifications
  • Relevant professional experience in the human services field.
  • Proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group such as Dari/Farsi, Pashto.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
  • Lived experience as refugee or asylee strongly preferred.
  • Professional experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred.
  • Professional experience in maternal, child and adolescent health preferred.
  • Familiarity with the refugee resettlement process and healthcare programs for refugee families with children preferred.
  • Strong relationship-building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.
  • Must have the ability to commute to and work in person at various locations in the state of California.
  • Must have stable internet access and connection in the remote workplace.
  • Ability to do occasional weekend and/or evening work as requested.
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work or related field of study desired.

WORK SETTINGS AND SCHEDULE
  • This is a hybrid position that will require employees to work both remotely (at home) and attend in-person meetings and events (up to 50% of the time). In-person work locations will be within the state of California.
  • This position may require working outdoors under typical seasonal weather conditions; most outdoor work will be in covered areas.
  • Mileage and travel expenses will be reimbursed for all travel done on behalf of PHI.
  • Typical hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 8 am-5 pm. This position may require you to work occasional evening and weekend hours in order to staff events or programs scheduled around the availability of community members.
