Assistant Strategic Communications Director

Job Summary

The Assistant Strategic Communications Director will guide strategic communications duties for assigned Purdue University sport program(s), while assisting with communications duties associated with Purdue Football as a secondary contact. In this role, you will work with Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications to support sport coaches, student-athletes and department personnel, manage and fulfill external media requests and other customer needs with the goal to maintain and strengthen ‎the image of the Purdue Boilermakers and provide supervision for student assistants, game-day support ‎staff and others to ensure all conference, NCAA and other reporting standards are met and information is ‎accurate. Additionally, you will appoint, critique and guide student staff and game day personnel, including but not limited to public address ‎announcers, scoreboard operators and others to ensure a smooth, seamless operation and an enjoyable, ‎informative experience for fans, media and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

• Manage day-to-day publicity efforts, including social media, web and other forms of outreach, for assigned sport program, Purdue Wrestling, working to positively impact brand image, while also assisting in communications efforts for Purdue Football
• Daily and weekly media relations efforts, drafting and posting of press releases, webpage design, writing and editing of printed and digital publications, media counseling of coaches and student-athletes, and proactive planning and execution of comprehensive media strategies to position the program in the most positive manner
• Work with marketing staff, creative services personnel, event management, facility operations, on-site television, video or radio production staff, visiting coaches, and visiting communications staff (and others) to ensure that home games, other events and outreach initiatives are enjoyable for fans and the public, and best represent student-athletes, coaches, sport program(s), and Purdue University
• Assist in overall communications, publicity and branding efforts for the athletics department in collaboration with fellow communications staff, marketing personnel, John Purdue Club staff and the creative services department
• Travel with assigned sport programs, as needed and when necessary, to execute prescribed duties
• Provide supporting coverage, as needed, throughout strategic communications department

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree
• 2 years of experience in sports information, communications, or public relations in a University or conference office setting or sports reporting for a newspaper, magazine or radio, television or other media outlet
• Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills
• Ability to meet established deadlines and work effectively with diverse groups of people
• Travel

Preferred:

• Bachelors in Communications, Journalism, English or related field of study
