Qualifications
He or she should be a team-player with a sincere desire and ability to serve our customers and team members. He or she should have an intimate familiarity with healthy lifestyle, organic farming, food, nutrition and natural healing; personal hygiene, grooming habits and clothing choices that exhibit cleanliness, professionalism and appropriateness for a food handling and customer-centered environment; a proven record of management, communication and leadership skills; the ability to learn and adapt quickly; a mastery of computer skills, including email, web browser, spreadsheet, word processing and database.
Must be availability to work flexibly full-time and to fill in for team member absences; 24-hour accessibility by telephone to respond to refrigeration and other emergencies; and the ability to bend, stoop, lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
Purpose
The grocery manager is primarily responsible for the success of the Real Food Store as it pertains to the grocery department, which includes bulk, cheese, frozen, packaged groceries, and refrigerated departments. Responsibilities include working with the leadership team and with other departments for the overall benefit of the business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Management
Anticipate staffing needs and schedule accordingly, cover for missing staff as needed
Provide feedback via evaluating and reviewing performance both formally and in the moment
Resolve conflicts among staff members promptly and fairly
Track sales, labor and gross profit margin figures to report to staff
Customer service. Model excellence in greeting and offering assistance to customers, which can include sampling and information on the benefits and uses of our products, whether within or outside the grocery department. Refer customers to other staff when needed.
Inventory management. Establish and maintain supportive relationships with suppliers. Maintain a high-quality selection of products that fit our mission of supplying healthy and sustainable foods. See to the receiving, pricing, promotion and merchandising of products so that sales, margin and shrink targets are met.
Other Duties Serve on leadership team. Serve as manager on duty. Communicate regularly with the general manager on issues relating to the department and the store. Cultivate relationships with peers in INFRA (Independent Natural Food Retailers Association) and elsewhere, and draw on industry publications and other sources to determine best practices and upgrade your knowledge and skills. Perform whatever tasks the store and department may require.
