Qualifications / Requirements
- Minimum five years teaching; core subject or special education preferred
- Masters Degree in Education or Administrative Leadership
- K-12 Principal Certification
- Employment Clearances (Act 34, 151, 114)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent time/task management manage many different responsibilities simultaneously, skills – able to multi-task and prioritize tasks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Comfortable learning various online student data recording/reporting tools
Characteristics of a Successful Dean of Students
The Dean of Students is appointed by the School Board and reports to the Principal or designee. Is responsible for creating and maintaining an orderly and positive school atmosphere where learning thrives and all students have the opportunity to succeed. This person models the Code of Conduct and the Core Values, maintains a safe, secure and orderly environment while promoting self-discipline, self-respect as well as respect for those around them.
The Dean of Students has a clear sense of the school’s Vision and focus on continuous improvement, embraces the Mission and Vision of the school and can influence others to drive the Mission toward high levels of success and achievement.
The Dean of Students is knowledgeable and experienced in the realm of classroom management and student behavior. This person is focused on forward planning and aware of how their role fits into the ‘bigger scope’ of school-wide needs with a clear understanding of the school policies and how they are applied in conjunction with the school progressive discipline schedule. An understanding of ADA and IDEA Regulations in accordance to student discipline is required. This person has initiative to seek out and find the information & training opportunities which will be beneficial to teachers in the areas of classroom management, conflict resolution, and positive reinforcement.
Role of the Dean of Students
- Chief Disciplinarian for Grades K-4
- Leadership: Support staff in the enforcement of school and classroom rules and regulations
- Leadership: Plan strategically both short term and long term in building and promoting character education
- Building supervision and security
- Supervision of parking lots, hallways, cafeteria, restrooms, and public areas
- Perform and assist in searches of students and belongings when necessary
- Leadership: Provide observational feedback to teachers on management practices and the long-term development of positive classroom behaviors
- Coordination of detentions and alternative placement
- Maintenance of student confiscated items
- School and Police Liaison
- Student Activities Director - approves and secures activities for student body
- Facility Coordinator and Scheduler for non-RA groups (YMCA, PMYC, VFCC, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.)
- Custodian of the master school calendar
- Supervision of athletic department
- Represent the school at school, student, and community events
- Approval and supervision of school events, clubs, and field trips
- Approval for use of funds earmarked for field trips
- Other tasks and duties assigned by the Principal or designee
Dean of Student is expected to achieve this through:
Daily
- Management of day-to-day items
- Meet with student, teachers, parents and address individual concerns
- Administer student discipline, assign discipline repercussions for behavioral infractions, contact parents, communicate with staff regarding resolutions
- Update PLP and Discipline Reports (as required)
- Return parental or student communication when requested within 24 hours
- Supervision of students in common areas during transition and at lunch
- Supervision at Bus Arrival and Departure
- Morning Announcements, Town Crier and Project Wisdom Prompts Distribution
- Communicate with LS Principal or Student Support Specialist for any LS discipline concerns reported by US students
- Maintain ongoing record of weekly detentions that are assigned
- School-wide crisis management plan/team
- Administer Lower School discipline, as needed
Weekly
- Meet with admin team: twice weekly for check ins, once bi-weekly for RTII and Sped, once weekly for technology
- Report concerns and accomplishments of student to Admin Team (2x Weekly)
- Provide guidance toward student goal setting, monitoring of grades and follow-up on RTII needs
- Communicate with teachers, teams or admin related to needs and expectations of students in classroom settings
- Communicate with parents regarding student success and struggles as needed
- Conduct informal observations/walk-throughs
- Meeting with Maintenance Supervisor to review upcoming events or needs
- Approve Field Trips and allocate funds for Transportation
- Approve Special Events (fundraisers, social events, student council activities, etc.)
- Review and approve paper communication and postings by teachers or students
- Supervision and Chaperone at various after school and weekend scheduled events
- Online Calendar Updates and Maintenance
- Monitor student grades for athletic eligibility in conjunction with Athletic Director
Monthly
- Attend scheduled Leadership Team Meetings (2x monthly)
- Attend staff meetings (1x monthly)
- Discipline Report to Admin Team and School Board meetings (1x monthly)
- Make positive phone calls/emails home to students
- Meet with teams to plan for the use of data and goal setting for individual students and groups of students regarding behavior goals
- Assess the quality of Behavior for Learning in the US; provide support and resources for improvement to students and staff
Trimestral
- Conduct formal and informal observations on faculty members (as needed or requested)
- Provide valuable & timely feedback (both positive and constructive) from observations so as to include growth information and coaching (within 48 hours of observation)
- Provide resources, sharing of best practices to teacher to assist in classroom management
- Plan professional development opportunities for departments and teams as necessary to educate and work towards academic goals and reduce students out of class for discipline
- Participate in SLC conferences once a trimester from 8AM-8PM for one day and 8AM-12PM for another day.
- Meet with parents during SLCs to address student concerns or parent concerns regarding grades, behavior, teachers, etc.
Yearly
- Attend yearly leadership retreat (July)
- Guide year-long planning by setting team norms/goals
- Establish personal professional goals; review with Admin at beginning and conclusion of academic year (July)
- Staff Training on Referral Writing, Restorative Practices, Online Calendar Use, RTII (August)
- Assist the Student Achievement Director in organizing and distributing the PSSA and MAP assessments
- Prepare Safe Schools Report in conjunction with Lower School Principal and Student Information Specialist (June)
- Assist Elemetary School Principal in the update of the Student Handbook (Summer)
- Attend a variety of events, performances & family involvement opportunities throughout the school year in support of the staff and students (year-long)
- Class Meetings as needed including annual Anti-Harassment Presentation
- Create Middle School Cafeteria Seating Chart (August)
- Determine Early Dismissal, End of Quarter Celebration, End of Quarter, SLC and Mid-Quarter Grades dates in conjunction with Admin Team (May)
- Online Calendar Upload (June)
- Organize revisions to school-wide activities calendar through leadership team and update online calendar
